The copier contract trick that costs businesses hundreds of thousands

Most businesses think once their copier is paid off…
it’s paid off.

Sadly, that’s often not true.

There’s a quiet little trick in the office equipment industry called a “re-sign.”
And it’s one of the most expensive mistakes companies make without realising it.

Here’s how it usually works 👇

Your copier contract is coming to an end.
A sales rep calls and says:

“Good news — we can lower your monthly cost if you just re-sign.”

They show you nice new numbers.
Everything looks cheaper.
So you sign.

What they don’t explain clearly is this…

You’re now paying for the same machine again — even though it was already paid off in the first contract.

The equipment is fully depreciated.
It has no real capital value left.
But the contract starts from zero again.

So the supplier earns money twice on the same machine.

You think you’re saving.
In reality, you just locked yourself into another 3–5 years of payments for hardware you already own.

And when you try to cancel?

Suddenly there are penalties.
Settlement figures.
Exit costs.

For a machine that was paid off years ago.

Technically, these contracts are “legal.”
But ethically? That’s a different story.

how much is for service

and what the machine is really worth

…you’re not in a partnership.
You’re in a blindfold.

Transparency matters.
Because trust, once broken, is very expensive to fix.
