Orange Corners Trust South Africa is proud to spotlight Zandile Kumalo, Founder and CEO of HyHarvest, a climate-smart Agri-tech company farming with the future in mind.
HyHarvest designs, builds and operates hydroponic farms on the rooftops of shopping centres, bringing food production closer to where people live and shop. In a world facing climate change, water scarcity and limited arable land, HyHarvest offers a smarter and more resilient way to grow food.
Today, the business operates two climate-smart hydroponic farms in Gauteng at Morningside Shopping Centre and River Square Shopping Centre. From these sites, HyHarvest supplies four restaurants and has secured offtake agreements with Food Lover's Market and Harvest Fresh for more than two tons of cocktail tomatoes.
Through the programme, Zandile and her team strengthened their understanding of ESG, carbon credits and social return on investment. By applying these tools, they have already identified five new potential sites for expansion, proving that sustainability can also be a driver of growth.
HyHarvest is not only producing food. It is creating opportunity. The business has created jobs, upskilled more than 34 young people and opened its farms as training hubs for the next generation of agripreneurs.
Supported by a strong team with experience across farming and technology, and guided by advisors in engineering, property development and agronomy, HyHarvest continues to grow with purpose.
At our Gauteng pitch event on 23 April, Zandile shared how additional investment would help install a hydroponic vine crop system to meet rising demand, unlock further growth and create new jobs. She was also awarded a planned business development visit to the Netherlands for international market access exposure, learning and partnership opportunities.

Unlocking Green Opportunities: Carbon Credits and Green Bonds for SMEs

We hosted an insightful session focused on helping SMEs unlock opportunities in the green economy and understanding how to access sustainable finance.

The discussion covered carbon credits, green bonds, ESG readiness, funding pathways and how small businesses can position themselves for growth within South Africa’s Just Energy Transition.

Attendees also explored practical tools for measuring impact, to build bankable green projects and connect with partners that support finance readiness.

A valuable engagement centred on turning sustainability into real business opportunity, resilience and long-term growth.

Wonderful news from Segametsi Songwane of Gideon Guard Textiles!

"When we embarked on our journey with the Orange Corners South Africa program, we were armed only with a proof of concept and a sense of uncertainty about which products to introduce to the market. The invaluable mentorship we received allowed us to carefully navigate this ambiguity, guiding us in the thoughtful selection of products for our market entry.

Through comprehensive value proposition analysis and insightful customer interviews, we were able to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges our target audience faces, thereby refining our strategy.

After rigorous evaluation, we made the strategic decision to focus on three cornerstone products—scatter cushions, socks, and laundry bags—each chosen not only to serve as the foundation of our brand awareness efforts but also to educate our customers about the critical problem we seek to address.

The funding provided by the program played a pivotal role in our progress, enabling us to identify a reliable socks manufacturer, create high-quality product samples, and successfully complete SABS testing. We are also exploring a diverse range of fabric types, including bandage and curtain materials, which are currently undergoing testing with SABS to ensure the highest standards of quality.

Today, we are proud to offer our products for sale on leading e-commerce platforms such as Makro, Takealot, and Leroy Merlin, marking a significant milestone in our journey."

The event also provided a deeper understanding of the "E" in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and how SMEs can incorporate ESG principles into their sales strategies. Additionally, participants were introduced to cutting-edge technologies within the Green Economy sector.

One of the key highlights of the day was the peer-to-peer learning sessions on sales pitching, alongside valuable insights from corporate leaders on best practices for selling.

Thank you to – Khuliso Mapila, Consumer Marketing Manager Africa, Philips.
The Orange Corners Trust extends its heartfelt gratitude to Khuliso Mapila of Philips for her valuable contribution at the Networking Session held on 7th November 2024 in Sandton.

During the event, Khuliso provided insightful guidance on the supply chain process at Philips for one of its key product lines, offering practical advice to SMEs on how to effectively sell their businesses.

Khuliso was deeply impressed by the caliber of entrepreneurs in the programme and encouraged them to continue their journey of growth and development.

💡Key Takeaways from the Session:

1. Explore Alternative Routes: If you are unable to secure a direct supplier relationship with a large organization, consider becoming a supplier to their suppliers. It’s important not to be discouraged if you can’t immediately convert a lead into a sale when pitching to a large company.

2. Passion is Key: When presenting your product or service, let your passion shine through. Genuine enthusiasm is essential to engaging potential clients.

3. Know Your Audience: Have a deep understanding of your product, but also tailor your communication to your audience to avoid losing their interest during your pitch.

⭐The Networking Event Featured:

· Presentations on advancements in Green Technology.
· Insights into selling through ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles and Social Return on Investment (SROI).
· An in-depth look at supply chain dynamics in large organizations, presented by Philips South Africa and Vopak South Africa.
· Pitch sessions, followed by constructive feedback on the presentations.
