Orange Corners Trust South Africa is proud to spotlight Zandile Kumalo, Founder and CEO of HyHarvest, a climate-smart Agri-tech company farming with the future in mind.
HyHarvest designs, builds and operates hydroponic farms on the rooftops of shopping centres, bringing food production closer to where people live and shop. In a world facing climate change, water scarcity and limited arable land, HyHarvest offers a smarter and more resilient way to grow food.
Today, the business operates two climate-smart hydroponic farms in Gauteng at Morningside Shopping Centre and River Square Shopping Centre. From these sites, HyHarvest supplies four restaurants and has secured offtake agreements with Food Lover's Market and Harvest Fresh for more than two tons of cocktail tomatoes.
Through the programme, Zandile and her team strengthened their understanding of ESG, carbon credits and social return on investment. By applying these tools, they have already identified five new potential sites for expansion, proving that sustainability can also be a driver of growth.
HyHarvest is not only producing food. It is creating opportunity. The business has created jobs, upskilled more than 34 young people and opened its farms as training hubs for the next generation of agripreneurs.
Supported by a strong team with experience across farming and technology, and guided by advisors in engineering, property development and agronomy, HyHarvest continues to grow with purpose.
At our Gauteng pitch event on 23 April, Zandile shared how additional investment would help install a hydroponic vine crop system to meet rising demand, unlock further growth and create new jobs. She was also awarded a planned business development visit to the Netherlands for international market access exposure, learning and partnership opportunities.
