🚨 URGENT S.O.S — 3 DAYS TO SAVE A YOUTH GRADUATION IN ORANGE FARM! 🇿🇦

At Pono Tharollo, our mission is to build and support the structures that lift our township communities. Today, we are stepping in to handle a critical emergency, and we need our digital village to stand with us.

A frontline, completely self-funded youth center in our network—Hope Restoration Community Projects in Orange Farm Ext 7A—runs a daily feeding scheme and provides deep anti-drug, anti-gang mentorship to local children. They are keeping kids off the streets and pointing them toward a positive future.

The Crisis: This coming Saturday, 20 June, they are hosting a milestone graduation for over 50 incredible children and teens—ranging from 5 to 14 years old, with older youth up to 16. This event celebrates their hard work and positive life choices.

However, corporate donation timelines take weeks, and due to safety tensions in the area, local spaza options are completely off-limits. The center currently has nothing to feed, heat, or seat these families this Saturday. We cannot let these kids down.

Our Strategic Move: Pono Tharollo is stepping in to handle the entire event layout and logistics, but we need to cover a strict, bare-bones emergency budget of R5,000. This covers:

🍗 Catering: Bulk chicken, rice, and fresh vegetables to feed 130 children, teenagers, parents, and community volunteers.

🔥 Energy & Setup: A 20kg LPG Gas cylinder refill for the large cooking pots, plus disposable plates, cups, and spoons.

🚚 Logistics: Transport hire to safely move borrowed plastic chairs, gas cylinders, and heavy equipment into the area.

HOW YOU CAN PARTNER WITH US TODAY:

We are breaking this R5,000 budget down into 25 slots of R200 each (or 10 slots of R500). Can you sponsor a slot today to ensure these children are celebrated? Every single cent goes directly to the frontline logistics.

Many Want To Start Security Companies — But Few Understand PSIRA.

Here’s A Step-By-Step Guide To Becoming Compliant And Building A Professional Security Business In South Africa.

The security industry in South Africa continues to grow rapidly as communities, businesses, transport routes, taverns, shopping areas, events, and township businesses increasingly require professional protection and safety services.

One of the biggest questions entrepreneurs ask is:

“How do I become PSIRA compliant and how long does the process take?”

As an organization constantly engaging with entrepreneurs and business owners, we believe access to the right information is important because many people have the vision to enter the security industry — but not enough guidance.

Here is a simplified consultation-style guide based on official information from the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority website and industry requirements.

Official website:
PSIRA Official Website

What Is PSIRA?

PSIRA stands for the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority.

It regulates all private security businesses and security officers in South Africa. Any individual or company offering security services must be registered and compliant with PSIRA to legally operate.

Step 1: Register Your Company

Before applying for PSIRA business registration, you first need a registered business through CIPC

Most entrepreneurs register:
• Pty Ltd company
• Partnership
• Sole proprietorship

You’ll receive:
• company registration documents,
• registration number,
• and official business records.

Step 2: Complete Security Training & Obtain Grades

PSIRA requires directors, partners, trustees, or key members involved in the security business to be registered security service providers with appropriate training.

Security grades include:
• Grade E — entry level
• Grade D — access control
• Grade C — patrol officer
• Grade B — supervisor
• Grade A — management level

Training must be completed at accredited training centres.

Most business owners aiming to operate professionally pursue Grade B or A qualifications.

Step 3: Register As An Individual Security Officer

Before registering the company itself, at least one director or member must first be individually registered with PSIRA.

Requirements commonly include:
• Certified ID copy
• Fingerprints
• Passport photos
• Training certificates
• Application forms
• Registration fees
• Criminal background considerations

Step 4: Apply For PSIRA Business Registration

Once individual registration is complete, the company itself can apply for business registration.

Common requirements include:
• CIPC company documents
• PSIRA certificates for directors
• Tax details from SARS
• Proof of address
• Company profile/business plan
• Office details
• Application fees

PSIRA may also conduct verification or inspection processes depending on the application.

How Long Does PSIRA Compliance Take?

This is one of the most common questions clients ask.

The timeframe depends on:
• how prepared your documents are,
• training completion,
• fingerprint processing,
• inspections,
• and PSIRA processing times.

Generally:
• Individual PSIRA registration may take a few weeks after successful training and document submission.
• Full business registration and compliance can often take anywhere from approximately 1 to 3 months, and sometimes longer depending on application backlogs or outstanding requirements.

Many experienced operators in the industry advise entrepreneurs to:
• prepare documents properly,
• keep certified copies updated,
• ensure tax compliance,
• and maintain constant follow-up with applications.

The process requires patience, professionalism, and proper administration.

The Biggest Opportunity In Township Security

Research and community experiences show increasing demand for:
• es**rt patrols for workers,
• safer taxi and bus routes,
• tavern and shisa nyama security,
• event security,
• CCTV monitoring,
• business patrols,
• and rapid local response.

The biggest gap is not simply more guards —
it is:

disciplined, trusted, community-based security companies.

Communities want safety solutions that are:
• visible,
• reliable,
• lawful,
• professional,
• and community-centered.

It is becoming one of the most important sectors protecting:
• entrepreneurs,
• workers,
• small businesses,

A safe community creates stronger businesses.
Stronger businesses create jobs.
And jobs help communities grow economically.

Township Economy: Where South Africa’s Next Big Businesses Are Being Built

For years, townships were viewed mainly as consumer markets. Today, research is showing something very different: townships are becoming some of the most powerful business and innovation hubs in South Africa.

The township economy is now estimated to contribute close to R1 trillion annually, proving that entrepreneurship in local communities is not only surviving — it is thriving.

What makes township businesses so powerful is simple: they solve real everyday problems. They operate close to the people, understand community needs, and move faster than many formal businesses.

The Businesses Leading Township Growth

1. Spaza Shops & Mini-Markets

Spaza shops remain the heartbeat of township commerce. They thrive because they offer convenience, flexible purchasing, and daily essentials within walking distance for many households.

The modern spaza shop is evolving fast:
• WhatsApp orders
• Airtime and electricity sales
• Digital payments
• Delivery services

Many are now operating like small supermarkets while still maintaining community trust.

2. Food Businesses Continue to Dominate

Food remains one of the fastest-moving businesses in townships.

From kota stands and magwinya vendors to shisa nyama spots and home-cooked meal businesses, entrepreneurs are generating daily cash flow from products people consume every single day.

What makes food businesses attractive:
• Low startup costs
• Fast turnover
• Strong community demand
• Social media marketing opportunities

Some township food brands are even becoming national brands through TikTok, Facebook, and word-of-mouth marketing.

3. Hair & Beauty Businesses Are Booming

Hair salons, braiding studios, nail businesses, and barbershops continue to grow across townships.

Beauty businesses succeed because they create repeat customers and strong loyalty. In many communities, a trusted barber or hairstylist becomes part of people’s lifestyle and identity.

Young entrepreneurs, especially women, are using beauty businesses not only to earn income but to build personal brands and employment opportunities.

4. Car Wash & Auto Services Are Growing Fast

As vehicle ownership increases in townships, so does the demand for car-related services.

Car washes, tyre repair shops, mechanics, and mobile auto services are becoming reliable income-generating businesses. Many entrepreneurs are turning simple roadside operations into respected local brands.

The taxi industry also creates consistent demand for automotive services in township economies.

5. Digital & WhatsApp Businesses Are the Future

One of the biggest shifts happening in townships today is digital entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurs are now using:
• WhatsApp Business
• Facebook Marketplace
• TikTok
• Online delivery systems
• Digital marketing

to sell products and services directly to customers.

The businesses growing the fastest are those combining:

community trust + digital convenience.

This includes:
• online resellers,
• local delivery businesses,
• township e-commerce brands,
• tutoring services,
• and digital creative businesses.

The Biggest Lesson From the Research

The township economy is no longer informal in the traditional sense. It is evolving into a more connected, branded, and digitally driven ecosystem.

The entrepreneurs winning today are not necessarily the ones with the biggest funding — they are the ones closest to the real needs of the people.

Townships are becoming:
• centres of innovation,
• creators of employment,
• and launchpads for African businesses.

The future of entrepreneurship in South Africa may not come only from corporate boardrooms or wealthy suburbs.

It may very well come from the streets, salons, kitchens, garages, and spaza shops of the townships.

🏆When Talent Grows Faster Than Listening👂🏾

I recently came across a woman whose work was exceptional. Her nails were beautiful, her braiding skills impressive, and over time her talent helped her grow into a respected business owner running a training school for nails and beauty.

It was inspiring to see her growth. But it also reminded me of something important in business:

A business can have talent, good products, high prices, and popularity — yet still lose clients because of how people feel when they are served.

Many businesses never realise how much growth they lose through poor customer experience, pride, lack of attentiveness, or failing to make clients feel valued. Sometimes clients do not complain — they simply never come back.

The market is always speaking.
Through complaints.
Through silence.
Through returning clients — or the lack of them.

Talent alone is not enough in business. Success also requires humility, professionalism, kindness, and the ability to listen to the people who support your brand.

The businesses that grow sustainably are those that remain teachable and connected to their clients’ needs.

A Few Reminders for Businesses

• Treat every client with warmth and respect
• Stay humble as your business grows
• Listen carefully to feedback and customer experiences
• Focus on relationships, not only transactions
• Never stop learning from your market

Quick Poll

What do you think is the biggest reason clients stop supporting some township businesses?

🔘 Poor customer service
🔘 Businesses stop listening once they grow
🔘 High prices without matching experience
🔘 Lack of professionalism and consistency
🔘 Clients don’t feel appreciated

Do you think better customer-care training and mentorship could help township businesses grow faster and attract bigger opportunities?
