Change is coming. Who is preparing your managers?

Our July 2026 WorldsView Conversation Café explores the role of middle managers in managing change and adaptation.

Because change does not happen through a project plan alone. It happens through everyday conversations, decisions, support, and sense-making inside teams.

Join us online at 18:00 for a practical conversation on how organisations can prepare managers to lead change where it matters most: close to the work.

Free to attend. Register to join us. https://zurl.co/q85Rl

If you want to understand an organisation, look at the middle.

Middle managers sit where everything meets:
- Strategy.
- Operations.
- People.
- Performance.
- Systems.
- Change.

No wonder the middle feels stretched. But it is also where strategy becomes action, culture becomes behaviour, and performance becomes possible. Practical management is about strengthening this space.

What support do middle managers need most right now?

Why does strategy feel so clear in the boardroom, but so confusing everywhere else?

Most organisations don’t have a strategy problem. They have a translation problem.

The strategy is communicated. The priorities are shared. The plans are documented. The meetings happen but somewhere between executive intent and everyday work, things start to blur. Everything feels important. Teams are busy, but not always aligned. Managers are expected to execute strategy without always being clear on what their team’s role should be.

Different functions interpret the strategy differently. This is where managers become critical, because strategy does not come to life through a presentation or a roadshow. It comes to life through daily decisions about priorities, meetings, resources, performance expectations, communication and team focus.

Management is often reduced to “people management.” But managers are also managing work, priorities, systems, performance, change and trade-offs. That is why many managers feel underprepared.

They are trained to communicate and coach, but then sent back into organisational complexity. Practical management is about helping managers make sense of the real work: what matters, what is stuck, and what needs to move.

What management skill do organisations underestimate?

Most managers were not waiting around for more work.

They already had targets, meetings, reports, team issues, customer demands and operational fires.

Then comes the new strategy.
The new structure.
The new change project.
The new performance expectation.
And managers are expected to translate it all while still keeping the work moving.

This is where practical management matters. Not as theory, but as the craft of creating clarity, setting priorities and helping teams perform in reality. What are managers most overloaded by right now?

Strategy does not fail because people “don’t get it.”

More often, it gets stuck in the gap between strategic intent and operational reality.

Managers are asked to translate strategy into action, but they are doing so inside existing systems, routines, KPIs, reporting lines, workflows, incentives, habits and structures.

So, before asking managers to “drive the strategy,” it may be worth asking:

What currently helps the strategy?
What currently gets in the way?

These two questions can surface a surprising amount about how the organisation is really designed to work and where ex*****on is being supported or blocked.

In this week’s WorldsView Academy newsletter, we explore why strategy ex*****on is rarely just a people problem and how organisational design thinking can help managers and leaders close the gap between idea and action. Read it here: https://zurl.co/3aRV0

OD professionals often sit close to the strategy conversation.
Managers sit close to the work... and the gap between those two spaces is often where strategy starts to lose meaning.

This month’s WorldsView Conversation Café is an opportunity to explore that gap more honestly. We will be looking at strategy translation as a practical management challenge: how strategic intent becomes team focus, operating rhythm, priorities, coordination and performance. For OD, HR and L&D professionals, this is a useful conversation. But it may be even more valuable for the managers you support.

So, for this Café, we would like to invite you to bring a manager, team leader or operational leader into the room.

Someone who is trying to make sense of shifting priorities.
Someone who is expected to align people and work.
Someone who is often told to execute strategy, but not always equipped to translate it.

Strategy rarely fails because nobody made a plan.

More often, it gets stuck in the space between executive intent and operational reality where managers are expected to “make it real” while still managing full workloads, shifting priorities, old systems, new KPIs and teams who are asking: “So what does this mean for us tomorrow?”

In last week’s emailer, Craig shared a fictional story about Musi, a middle manager trying to understand and execute a new strategy while the everyday work keeps moving. It raises an important question: How often do organisations confuse communicating strategy with translating strategy?

At WorldsView Academy, we believe strategy becomes useful when managers and teams have enough clarity to act coherently; not just repeat the language of alignment.

Everything is urgent. Everything is important.
Every department has priorities.

Every team is trying to deliver... and somewhere in the middle of all of it, managers are expected to make the strategy “happen”. But what happens when the strategy is not clear enough to guide daily work? What happens when KPIs still reward yesterday’s priorities? What happens when teams are busy, committed and exhausted but not necessarily aligned?

This is the real work of strategy translation. Not the polished slide deck. Not the launch presentation. Not the executive offsite. The real test is whether managers can turn strategy into clear priorities, better decisions, focused meetings, aligned teams and meaningful performance conversations.

Strategy does not usually fail because nobody wrote it down.

It fails when the people closest to the work are left trying to interpret what it actually means.

Managers are often told to “drive the strategy” but are they given the clarity, authority, systems and support to translate that strategy into daily decisions, team priorities, performance expectations and meetings that matter?

That is the focus of our next WorldsView Conversation Café:

Practical Management – Strategy-in-Action: Strategy Translation
24 June 2026

We have moved this Café to an evening slot in the hope that more managers, team leaders and busy practitioners can join the conversation.

This is not a webinar or a strategy presentation. It is a facilitated working conversation for people wrestling with the realities of ex*****on.

If strategy feels clear at the top but confused in the middle, this one is for you.
