South Africa’s packaging landscape is changing.

From greater focus on recyclability to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and smarter material use, the way packaging is designed is evolving.

For brands, packaging today needs to do more than protect the product. Material choice, end-of-life considerations and efficient design are becoming increasingly important parts of the conversation.

At Close the Loop, we work with brands to develop flexible packaging solutions that balance product protection, performance and sustainability goals.

This Heritage Month, we’re looking at some of the key trends helping shape the future of packaging in South Africa.

This Heritage Month, we’re celebrating some of the proudly South African products that form part of our food culture — and it doesn’t get much more South African than biltong.

This 3-side seal pouch, supplied for ABull Cured Meat, is a great example of packaging designed around both the product and the shelf.

Featuring a resealable zipper, euroslot, easy-tear opening and a clear window to showcase the droëwors inside, the pouch combines functionality with bold, eye-catching branding.

For products like biltong and droëwors, packaging plays an important role in helping protect the product, maintain freshness and flavour, and give consumers the convenience they expect.

From custom printed packaging like ABull’s to our ready-to-label biltong pouches, we’re proud to provide packaging solutions for South African products and businesses.

Looking for packaging for your biltong or droëwors range? Get in touch with Close the Loop to discuss your packaging requirements.

This Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the proudly South African products, businesses and brands that have become part of our everyday lives.

From local favourites to household names, every product has a story — and the right flexible packaging helps bring that story to life on shelf. It protects what’s inside, creates recognition, communicates what a brand stands for and helps products stand out in an increasingly competitive market.

Because packaging isn’t only about containing a product. It’s part of how that product is seen, remembered and experienced.

Here’s to the South African brands making their mark — and the stories still being packed for the future.

Behind Every Pack, There’s a Story: More Than Just Coffee

This Heritage Month, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on Innovation for the Blind and the incredible story behind Blindiana Coffee.

Based in Worcester and serving the visually impaired community since 1881, Innovation for the Blind creates opportunities for skills development, employment and greater independence.

From packaging and distribution to the remarkable journey of Joseph Matheatau, South Africa’s first blind barista, Blindiana Coffee is proof that what’s inside a pack can represent so much more than a product.

We’re proud to play a small part in that story by providing the packaging that helps bring Blindiana Coffee to customers.

Because behind every pack, there are people, purpose and a story worth sharing.

This Heritage Month, we’re celebrating something truly lekker, something proudly South African — biltong.

From traditional sliced biltong and droëwors to chilli bites and sticks, biltong has long been a firm South African favourite. But producing a great product is only part of the story — the right packaging plays an important role in protecting its quality from shelf to snack.

Biltong naturally contains residual moisture, which is key to its texture and quality. Packaging with the right moisture barrier helps control moisture transfer, preventing the product from drying out or absorbing excess moisture.

Oxygen protection is just as important. Exposure to oxygen can affect biltong’s colour, flavour and freshness over time, making the right oxygen barrier an important consideration when choosing packaging.

And it’s not only about protection. Functionality matters too. Resealable zippers, easy-tear openings and the right pack size can help maintain quality after opening while making the product more convenient for consumers to enjoy.

Because the right packaging does more than simply hold your biltong — it helps protect the flavour, texture and quality that make it lekker.

This Heritage Month, keep it lekker. Give your biltong the packaging it deserves.

September is Heritage Month 🇿🇦, culminating in Heritage Day on 24 September — a day that has also become synonymous with another proudly South African tradition: Braai Day.

And there’s a special connection behind it. In 2005, Jan Braai founded the National Braai Day initiative with a simple idea: to encourage South Africans from all backgrounds to celebrate our shared heritage by gathering around a fire.

So, when looking through some of the proudly South African packs we’ve produced, this JanBraai Koffie pouch felt particularly fitting to feature this month.

The coffee is packed in a custom printed flat bottom pouch, with bold JanBraai branding and South African colours incorporated into the design. The flat bottom format provides stability and strong shelf presence, while the resealable zipper makes it practical for keeping coffee stored between uses.

A pack connected to a brand that has played its own part in how South Africans celebrate Heritage Day today.

This Heritage Month, we’re proud to celebrate the local brands, products and traditions that make South Africa home.
