THE COUNTDOWN IS ON | CAN YOU HELP CONNECT THE MINE OF THE FUTURE?

Introducing the RTIMS Capability Development Starter Kit Design Challenge which will be launched at the MMP 2nd bi-annual showcase – an invitation to systems integrators to develop a design for a complete starter kit, made up of three modules:
· Connectivity
· IT/OT data and analytics
· Energy

The goal? To develop a modular, or integrated practical solution built on open standards, designed for deployment in mining environments and usable by the mine personnel responsible for running it.

This is a design-only challenge. Participation is voluntary, and participants retain their intellectual property. Shortlisted teams will present their designs to an evaluation panel of expert industry representatives in January 2027.

Your expertise does not have to cover all three modules. Opt in to teaming when you register, and we will help to connect you with organisations whose expertise complements yours.

The challenge is run by RIIS in partnership with Enterprises University of Pretoria and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), for the Mandela Mining Precinct’s RTIMS programme. Final submissions are due by 17:00 on 11 December 2026.

We recently sat down with Ngwenya for a conversation about her journey across mining, engineering, artificial intelligence and innovation.

A Machine Learning Research Engineer, Sibahle is using technology to solve problems in the engineering space while also creating pathways for young women in tech. She is also part of the Miss South Africa 2026 Top 24.

Originally planned for Women’s Month, this conversation came together during Heritage Month — at a time when celebrating and amplifying the voices and contributions of women feels especially meaningful.
