DAILY UPDATE ON THE MOVEMENT OF THE COLD BOX UNIT ABNORMAL LOAD

Yesterday, 04th November 2024, the Cold Box Unit covered a total distance of 68 kilometres and had a night stop at the gate of the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Livingstone.

The load is on schedule and is expected to pass through the Livingstone Central Business District (CBD) this morning.

We will continue to closely monitor the movement and provide further updates to motorists and members of the public.

The Cold Box Unit Abnormal Load is in transit from Katima Mulilo Border to Solwezi's Kansanshi Mine.

The Cold Box Unit is critical to mining operations and weighs 154 metric tonnes, along with the two truck horses and self-steering axles, resulting in a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 224 metric tonnes.

WINDY WEDNESDAY
The transportation of a total of 230 wind blades by Vanguard Pty Ltd using our SCHEUERLE Rotor Blade Transport System (RBTS) is still in full swing in South Africa! Each blade, 83 meters long, is being moved with precision and safety over 500 kilometers. We are thrilled to see our RBTS performing excellently, ensuring efficient and secure deliveries. Our 15 ton Ormig pick and carry crane demonstrated its capabilities last week with a solution that saved both cost and time for our client.

Recent proposals to remove the roof of a building in Johannesburg in order to install 4 x 1.8ton tanks, had prompted our client to contact Vanguard in search of a more practical and cost-effective solution.

Despite a restrictive site layout and tight manoeuvrability, our in-house engineering team proposed the use of one of our Ormig pick and carry cranes due to its compact size and 15 ton lifting capacity. This method provided safe and secure transport and installation of all 4 tanks through a side access door. Saving our clients cost, time, disruption and effort, as the roof removal would no longer be required.

The Vanguard team has recently been supporting power infrastructure projects within the mining sector, by successfully completing the replacement of three 40 ton transformers.

Due to tight lifting constraints, our in-house engineering team designed a bespoke heavy lift solution, using a 550ton mobile crane to safely load the transformers onto one of our 6 row self propelled trailers, before transporting each cargo to its designated lay-down area.

Vanguard have recently been providing mechanical and electrical installation services for our client. We have been contracted to install and commission a range of components including 3 x 400ton presses, a 600ton press and a 800ton press.

The project is scheduled to be completed in under 8 weeks and will utilise a range of Vanguards specialist equipment and service offerings.

Our Ormig pick and carry electric crane with 15 ton capacity, has a concise design to handle loads in tight and restrictive spaces. The design and functionality of the crane enabled us to remove old components from a 4 ton filler and replace it with new components whilst minimising disruption on site.

The Vanguard team have extensive experience in relocating a wide range of industrial plant and machinery, across a variety of industry sectors. We recently completed a factory removal by lifting a 13 ton knitting machine, loading it onto one of our specialist trailers and transporting it to Brits, South Africa.

Vanguard have successfully demonstrated a bespoke engineering solution to replace a 14 ton mixer. The restrictive access contributed to added complexities, with a crane unable to gain access to the load inside the building.

Vanguard designed a tailored solution to replace the mixer through an elevated position on the side of the building. Using a purpose built lifting frame to support the load, we repositioned the mixer from its original location, to the outer wall of the building. Both a 130 ton and 55 ton capacity crane, rigged outside of the building, then continued the lift operations and successfully removed the mixer.

These operations were then repeated in reverse to successfully install the new replacement mixer, with the entire operation taking 2 days to complete.

Vanguard is installing generator and turbine sets to kick off the installation of a power plant in the Western Cape.

Vanguard relocated the cargo from Antwerp, Belgium and has been the principal contractor for all handling and installation work on-site.

Our engineering expertise was required in Alberton last week, where we lifted and installed two conveyor belts weighing 2.2 tons each. Vanguard’s engineering team designed a solution using a heavy-duty chain hoist alongside a bespoke lifting and slinging arrangement to successfully lift the conveyor belts to a height of 37m without the use of large cranes.
