It was a profound privilege to collaborate with the Sacred Heart College Alumni on the momentous occasion of Brother Niel McGurk’s tribute and the official launch of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association on Saturday, 30 November 2024.
The day was a testament to the values of bravery, compassion, and humility of this unsung hero, Brother Neil McGurk, who defied apartheid’s oppressive policies by opening the school’s doors to students of all races and religions in the late 1970s. Braving security police, he ensured that children from Soweto, Eldorado Park, Bosmont and Mayfair had access to a great education in an inclusive environment. Under his leadership, the school became one of the first private institutions to become a genuine cultural melting pot, standing as a pillar of resistance and progress during a dark chapter in South Africa’s history. The day was filled with immense pride, joy, nostalgia, insights, reflections, and engagements that were rich and of immense value to the alumni and attendees and had a deep sense of purpose.
As a parent of a current student and an alumnus, I feel a profound connection to the school's values and ethos.
The event was a celebration of memorable stories, insights, and the laying of a solid foundation for the Alumni Association. I extend my gratitude to the Association for entrusting me with this event, alongside esteemed colleagues Kgaugelo Maphai, Mpho Makhuvha, Taki H Makhuvha, Ramogase, Mvulane Moloi.
This experience has left an indelible mark, and I look forward to witnessing the continued growth and impact of the school Sacred Heart College and of the Sacred Heart College Alumni Association."
