How to network like a pro!

Networking is a key social-business skill. It can lead to a myriad of opportunities such as a new business or a future spouse. Whatever, the case networking cannot be taken for granted. Here are some tips that will help you network like a pro at events:

1. Research before the event

If the event is a presentation or panel discussion learn as much as you can about the panelists- you can easily do this using social media. Some professionals are not on Facebook or even Twitter but you will most likely find them on LinkedIn. If it’s simply a networking event try to get a list of the people attending prior to the event. Find out more about them via the internet: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, GooglePlus- things to look out for are common interests, their profession. These two can help you to build some rapport and perhaps get into future ventures together. So prepare a few questions or points to discuss with them- Note: when you ask people about themselves they perceive you to be interesting which allows for that rapport build up.

2. Pre-social media networking

Use your social media accounts for to tweet or share that you will be attending the event. Use the hashtag for the event. This gives you an opportunity to network with other people that may be attending prior to the event!

3. You should always know your story

Sometimes you have the opportunity to meet with a future investor or business partner. If they happen to be popular at the networking event it means you only have a few minutes with them. Always be ready to tell them who you are, what you’re passionate and great at. Let your story exude brilliance, passion, vision without boasting and definitely no bad-mouthing of competitors or ex-colleagues.

4. Don’t forget to carry your business cards

After your “few seconds of networking” above the person you are networking with might ask for your business card. Make sure you have them ready- it’s always an anti-climax when you impress someone and end up failing to produce a business card. It just appears as if you were over-selling yourself! So make sure, you have business cards. As a general rule it’s better to give someone a business card when they ask for it or for your contacts. Dishing them out like confetti to people who are not really interested might not yield anything.

In addition to having a business card you can also have a business card app. Some really handy ones can allow you to get away with fact that you’ve forgotten to bring business cards. For instance Clink allows you to email your business card with contacts attached to any device. And CamCard reads business cards and instantly saves them into your contacts!

5. Live-tweet

As the event progresses tweet the interesting points, share pics with your followers and also just follow the event’s hashtag- re-tweeting those that are on interest. What your essentially doing is networking with people that are interested in the event’s subject matter via Social Media and taking note of attendees whom you might want to network with after the event.

6. Pay attention to your ‘network’

Listening is an extremely key component to networking as well as building relationships. Try to listen more than you speak- ask questions to better understand their interests and their business. Respond to questions they ask- this is a chance to offer your expertise but don’t monopolise the conversation listen more than you talk. Note: DO NOT- greet or shake someone’s hand while looking around the room- it’s rude and it appears as if you’re disinterested in the person before you.

7. Always follow up

Networking with follow ups can easily become a wasted exercise. I have done it before- you meet a potential client or vice versa and you connect very well, exchange contacts and you get too busy resulting in your failure to follow up. The best way to avoid this is to follow up the next day: with a tweet, an email, call- it doesn’t matter as long as you make a follow while you are still fresh in each other’s minds.

Networking is not easy for everyone- i hope these seven tips will improve your network skills and consequently improve your life. Here’s to your success!
