This journey has been filled with many lesson one being “ Being in business does not feel a glamorous as it may look”. Over the period that I have been in business I have been exposed to different sectors like mining, logistics, tendering and as a result I have gravitated into the property, agriculture and consultancy sectors. Success can never be achieved without having people who guide you is another lesson I have learnt and I would recommend that all young people find well groomed, respectful and helpful mentors.

My journey started in 2017 when I left university. I was so unhappy with my career path and felt like I needed a new purpose. Agriculture has always been a sign. My late grandmother was a farmer, I studied farming first year before I left it for another field (human physiology, genetics and psychology), I'm always advocating for nutrition and growing your own foods, I'm very independent and resilient, all these truths about me steered me closer to agriculture.

I started becoming a YouTube scholar until I finally ventured into volunteering at local farms to learn more about it. A true deep passion arose.

2018, I went back to school to study the course again. The following year I was growing cabbages (my first crop) in communal land in the villages of Transkei.

This year I obtained my lease to farm in Boksburg, Johannesburg for five years where I grow spinach, rapeseed leaves, baby marrows, green beans and hubbard squash.

The road to get to where I am now was crucial, I don't take it for granted because it made me a strong person. Agriculture is a science that needs education, patience, continuity and money. I'm now working hard and tirelessly in the industry and I would not change a thing.

Funding is still a major challenge in the business especially if you want to grow and expand. However, if you're committed to the business, you'll ensure you grow your business with the little that you have.

Many might think that agriculture is just sitting in a farm house, taking in the breeze of nature and have self growing plants and self feeding livestock. It's not the half of it. You work hard and tirelessly to reap rewards, so make sure that the love you have for it is deep enough.

I started selling as a debutante in high school, then sold t-shirts for a group events company we started with a few friends and kept doing various other businesses till RareRabbit came along.

I’m the 3rd generation of entrepreneur in my family. My grandfather sold fruits and vegetables from door to door. My dad sold soft goods initially then went into retail. And now I help people like my dad and grandfather do more for themselves and their families.

At RareRabbit we understand that entrepreneurs want to leave their businesses behind as legacies that continue for their children, so we help them build their businesses that way.

My entrepreneurial journey began when I was studying Bcom Economics and Finance at UKZN. I joined SIFE now called ENACTUS which is a global student society program that assists communities through various entrepreneurial projects. We won at the South African national level and went on to compete in Singapore where we got to the semi-finals.

In my first job as a business analyst in Standard Bank within the debt review and credit rehabilitation departments, the data showed that many people with decent incomes were in financial distress. I had discovered the problem I wanted to solve in society and the business I would go into.

Since 2013, I’ve been in the financial education business. My greatest challenge has been the sentiments shared by many - being that money is a taboo topic, especially in the black community. Most people prefer to sweep it under the carpet. The business I am in is like selling medicine to a person that doesn't want to admit that they have an ailment.

Over the years I have learned that you may have an amazing pill for a problem but you need to package and market it in an attractive manner so that your customers buy it. This is part of the reason I also wrote my book which is a fictional African story embedded with financial wisdom.

It has been a difficult journey but it is truly amazing to be working on my calling and helping people with their financial journeys.

I think if you decide to be in business, you must do something you are passionate about and solve a real or perceived problem.

What started as a hobby turned into my first business as a makeup artist, and evolved into selling hair and beauty products. Over time, I was able to develop my entrepreneurial skills enough to take a bigger risk than I ever had at that point in time – and that’s how was born. Creating my home fragrance brand challenged me follow my passion, fill a gap in the home décor market and play the game in a much different way than I’d grown used to.

I’m still practicing as a professional in the built environment, and while being in control of how I spend my time while running my own business is rewarding - it is also very hard. And sometimes maintaining a work/life/business balance is not always possible, but I’ve always kept creating and solving problems to increase my productivity. I’ve never been afraid of a challenge because I know that a fear of failure will never ensure one’s success.

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned so far is being able to step out of my comfort zone in order to grow – not only as a professional, but as an entrepreneur as well. Learning how to take calculated risks, adapting to change and exploring new ideas has allowed me to build long-term value that I can take with me wherever I go.
