******Quasimodo: The name that echoed beyond the bells******

The scene: Paris, the book; a memoir; the topic, fused identity: Jewish and Muslim.

When the author referenced Quasimodo, I wanted to explore the legend in more depth. I assume that, like me, many people know the character without knowing where he came from or how he entered everyday language.

Quasimodo first appeared in the 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by French writer Victor Hugo. The story is set in fifteenth-century Paris and centres on the great cathedral of Notre-Dame, which Hugo feared was falling into neglect. Through his novel, he hoped to rekindle public appreciation for Gothic architecture.

*****It takes balls to beard the lion*****

I have to say, I'm not a fan of beards on men. I like clean-shaven, short back and sides. So when I happened across the phrase “to beard the lion” in a memoir I was reading. I was eager to find a situation where I would be partial to the beard. And here it is.

You could be challenging an unfair boss, questioning a public figure, or standing up to a bully. These great acts of courage are colourfully captured in the phrase “to beard the lion."

****Writing on the wall: innocuous or ominous? Depends how you read it.****

When a friend drops me off at home, I tell her, “The writing is on the wall” as the house on the corner where she has to turn has the owner’s name painted on it, and it just so happens to be the same name as hers. To say, “The writing is on the wall,” to remind her where to make a left, never gets corny.

However, there is a more significant meaning to the phrase, which dates back several centuries.

Some phrases survive because they capture a truth so perfectly that generations keep reaching for them. “The writing is on the wall” is one of those expressions – a dramatic warning wrapped in ancient imagery. We use it when disaster seems inevitable, when the signs are obvious, or when denial is no longer possible. Long before it became the language of failing businesses, doomed relationships, or collapsing political careers, however, the phrase emerged from one of the most chilling scenes in the Bible.

****Dionysus: Where Order Unravels and Instinct Takes Over****
I love theatre and the arts. My ticket for the South African production of Pretty Woman is booked, and I can't wait! Today I was treated to some theatrics at a surprising venue. I played my part and danced - on the stage - mind you, to gay abandon, throwing caution and inhibition to the wind. It's fair to say I had a
Dionysian experience.
There’s a particular kind of chaos that feels almost… holy. Not the destructive kind, but the kind that loosens the grip of routine and lets something older, wilder slip through. Enter Dionysus — the Greek god who didn’t just flirt with excess, he embodied it.
Nine lives?

Dischem can't spell - No apology

In the so-called efficient service Packmymeds, Dischem issued Normison - fast acting sedative for chronic insomnia, instead of Normoten for blood pressure. When I pointed this out, the pharmacy assistant insisted that the pack said Normeton. It took almost an hour to issue the correct medication. I imagined what would have happened if I had consumed the Normison before getting into my car, with a horrible scenario of a major car accident., due to the fast-acting psychotropic drug. Dischem has offered no compensation.

****How to alternate the alternative****

Yesterday, while working through a client’s document, I had to change ‘alternate’ to ‘alternative’ to ensure that the right word was used.

This is a common mistake among many who have become comfortable with the language and assume that alternate and alternative are interchangeable. Despite sounding like a good swap as and when you feel they do not work like that.

*** Tell the truth with veracity ****
Today we are going to have some fun exploring the difference between veracity and voracity. These words, if not heard correctly, can be interchanged to disastrous effect.
The one has to do with truth, the other appetite. Or you could say, veracity concerns one’s appetite for truth, while voracity has to do with a desire to consume.
Getting down to it, Dictionary.com offers for veracity: noun 1. habitual observance of truth in speech or statement; truthfulness: He was not noted for his veracity. 2. conformity to truth or fact; accuracy: to question the veracity of his account. 3. correctness or accuracy, as of the senses or of a scientific instrument. 4. something veracious; a truth.

***Cat in the bag rewrites idiom***

Today’s blog is inspired by my cat. She likes to explore all the opportunities available to her in a modest apartment. She loves boxes, wardrobe shelves and sleeping under the bed when the sky thunders. Yesterday I found her in my travel bag that I’ve been using for gym. As it was lying outside the cupboard, she placed herself inside it, taking ownership as only cats can. This immediately made me think of the idiom, letting the cat out of the bag.
Not everyone can keep a secret, hard as they might try. And suddenly it just slips out. A half-sentence here, a careless comment there, and despite best intentions, what was meant to be closely held is out in the open. That moment has a name: “letting the cat out of the bag.”

****Schmoozing for business *****

Today, I painted my walls – yesterday’s manicure notwithstanding - to cover the unsightly marks made by my cat. Oy vey, what a schelp; getting the floor ready, wiping the walls clean, hauling the stepladder, assembling the rollers and brushes, opening and pouring the paint to the correct measure.

As I went ‘oying’ and ‘veying’ along, I realised that Yiddish too has enhanced the English language with many phrases used as is or adapted over time.

One of these words is schmooze – here Merriam-Webster sums it up:
“Schmooze (also spelt shmooze) schlepped into English from the Yiddish “schmue”, meaning "talk," which itself is from the Hebrew shěmu’ōth, meaning "news" or "rumour." Although originally used to indicate simply talking in an informal and warm manner, the word now commonly suggests conversation for the purpose of gaining favour, business, or connections. Schmooze is one of a number of English schm- words originating from Yiddish; other classics include schmaltz (referring to rendered animal fat or excessively sentimental music or art), schmuck (a slang word for "jerk"), schmutz ("a filthy or soiling substance"), and schmear ("a layer of cream cheese").”
Yiddish is such an expressive language. Synonyms of schmooze – chat, talk, converse, chatter gab, do not have the same character and flavour.

I digress, back to the walls. It’s part strategy, part need. The walls were looking “schmutzic”, and I wanted to restore them to the gorgeous purple they once were. Also, I had time on my hands and the will to DIY. As a freelancer, my time is my own, and usually when I do something far removed from my profession (writing and editing), the requests for my actual skills start to roll in (strategy).
Now, I am off to schmooze a potential client.
