A STRIKE IS LOOMING IN THE PRIVATE SECURITY SECTOR
A potential strike is brewing in the private security sector after wage negotiations at the National Bargaining Council for Private Security Sector collapsed.
Wage negotiations started in April and collapsed this month after parties failed to find each other. Labour is demanding a R900 per month wage increase for the next three years while employers are offering a measly 3.5%.
Labour has applied for the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to conciliate. The CCMA has 30 days within which to convene the parties. If the parties still can't reach an agreement, the CCMA will have no choice but to issue a certificate of non-resolution, enabling the more than 500 000 workers in the sector to go on a protected strike.
