We recently unpacked the challenge of skills gaps in the workplace, delving into what they're all about and why they may occur. Let's now touch on the steps employers can take to address them:
1. CLARIFY: Refine your business strategy and identify which roles contribute to meeting your goals. If there's currently no role in place to meet an objective, consider creating one.
2. ASSESS: Conduct a skills gap analysis to determine what skills your workers already possess. More specifically, check that each worker has the skills required to perform their own job properly.
3. DECIDE: Where gaps are discovered, determine if they can be closed by training up existing workers or if new, already suitably-skilled people would solve the need faster.
4. TRAIN: It's always best to look within the company's own talent pool before casting the net wider. See if current employees can be upskilled (if in the same role) or reskilled (if currently in a different role).
5. HIRE: Alternatively, if there are no suitable options within the current workforce, you may wish to broaden the search.
Naturally, frequent skills gap analyses and consistent L&D activities are the best ways for companies to keep up with the constantly-changing world of work. It's not an option for most organisations to repeatedly hire new people every time a skills shortage arises – more often than not, an investment in the capable staff a company already has in the best route.
