Centre for Social Change The Chair is funded by the Department of Science and Technology and administered by the National Research Foundation. The chair-holder is Prof.

The South African Research Chair in Social Change is made up of scholars and students of varying backgrounds in the humanities who undertake research on all facets of social change and related themes. It exists as a unit within the Faculty of Humanities, and is encouraged to raise funds from other sources. The Chair’s aim is to understand the dynamics of social change in contemporary South Africa.

This goal is addressed by means of numerous projects. The principal focus is on social change from below, including South Africa’s ‘Rebellion of the Poor’, but projects cover a wide range of topics from political economy, through social class and social entrepreneurs to South African film-makers. Peter Alexander, professor of sociology. His team includes Dr. Marcelle Dawson, a senior researcher seconded from the Sociology Department, who leads two projects funded by the National Research Foundation. The unit consists of research staff and associates, post-doctoral fellows, and doctoral and masters students.
