Correction and Apology

In a recent article I published, I referred to a High Court order as being “forged” or appearing to be inauthentic.

On further reflection, and in the absence of formal verification from the Court, that statement was not appropriate. I have since withdrawn the assertion in full and issued a formal apology to the Honourable Judge concerned and to the legal practitioner referenced.

It is important to me that my work—particularly where it engages matters of law, ethics, and public accountability—remains grounded in accuracy, fairness, and responsible judgment. In this instance, I did not meet that standard.

I take responsibility for the error and have corrected the record accordingly.

The article has been amended to reflect this position.

Accountability applies in all directions.

🎲 When the Odds Quietly Shift Against the Consumer

In recent weeks, I discovered that the South African National Lottery (LOTTO) has once again changed its number matrix — now requiring players to select 6 numbers from 58, up from 52, and originally 49 when the game was launched.

On the surface, that might sound like a minor adjustment.
But in mathematical reality, it’s a massive reduction in the consumer’s chance of winning.

Let’s put it simply:

LOTTO Format Chance of Matching 5 Numbers
6/49 1 in 54,201
6/52 1 in 73,763
6/58 1 in 189,731

In other words, your odds of winning a secondary prize have dropped by over 250% since the game’s inception — with no visible public disclosure explaining how much harder it’s become to win.

Ramaphosa’s nephew Hangwani Maumela loses R326m in Tembisa hospital corruption crackdown

The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has seized assets worth R326 million from Hangwani Morgan Maumela, the alleged mastermind of a syndicate that defrauded Tembisa Hospital.

Maumela, a nephew by marriage to President Cyril Ramaphosa, had a fleet of luxury cars including four Lamborghinis and a Bentley upscale homes, and even a party boat frozen under High Court preservation orders issued on August 14, 2025.

The AFU’s action also targets 14 companies linked to Maumela, which allegedly secured over R400 million in hospital contracts through manipulated procurement between 2019 and 2021.

Investigations by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) revealed a network of fraud involving forged documents and favoritism toward Maumela’s companies, which operated from a single Sandton address despite claiming legitimacy in medical supply provision.

The scandal first emerged in 2021 after Gauteng Health Department accountant Babita Deokaran raised alarms over suspicious tenders shortly before her assassination. The syndicate’s actions contributed to an estimated R2.3 billion in losses at the hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.

NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane described the seizures as a “decisive blow against corruption,” with the assets set to be forfeited to the state pending criminal proceedings. Civil society groups, including the EFF, welcomed the move but urged swift arrests to prevent further cover-ups.

The case highlights entrenched corruption in South Africa’s public health sector, with Maumela’s downfall sending a clear message that accountability can reach even the most connected individuals.
