The SANS 10142 course is run throughout the year. It is the learner's responsibility to enrol for the examination and can be done at any FET College. The Department of Education set out the dates for enrolment, it usually takes place in January, May and September.
Criteria One: Theoretical Knowledge(Installation rules)
The learner can choose to do both papers at the same time or you can do one paper per block. According to regulation you have to complete(pass) both papers within 12 months of each other, failing to pass both papers within 12 months will require you to re-write both papers, however should you pass with 75% or more on any of the two papers you will not be required to re-write that specific paper again.
Criteria Two: Practical Knowledge
Now that you have completed(passed) both papers on installation rules you will have to submit documentary proof that you have successfully completed unit standards on inspection, testing and certification of single phase and/or three phase industrial/commercial installations as described by the ESETA
To be found competent in these unit standards the applicant will have to be assessed by an assessor that is registered with the ESETA. The assessor will assess your ability to interpret the codes of practice on various electrical installations. You will also have to demonstrate your ability to use test instruments and interpret inspection report readings and evaluate a CoC against an electrical installation.
Once the applicant is found competant by the assessor, the details are sent through to the ESETA, who will then issue the applicant with a letter for the Department of Labour.
Criteria Three: Trade Qualification
To be able to apply for registration as an installation electrician, the applicant must have a trade qualification as either
an Electrician, millwright or a lift mechanic
