Powering the future of digital infrastructure at ITW Africa!

As data demand expands across the continent, balancing energy efficiency, power resilience, and uptime has never been more critical.

We’re excited to share that our CEO, Menno Parsons, will be speaking on the panel "Powering Digital Infrastructure Efficiently: Optimisation, Monitoring and Resilience".

Datacloud Keynote Stage, Floor 1
Key discussion focus:
- How DCOs and network operators reduce PUE and cut energy waste
- Leveraging software automation and DCIM for intelligent monitoring
- Building resilient hybrid power models (grid, diesel, and storage)
- Driving real-time visibility through predictive maintenance and load balancing

Be sure to also find our team at Stand 200.

For years the story of African engineering was about talent leaving.

That is changing. As investment spreads across the continent, skilled people are staying, and some are coming back, drawn by the chance to build the data centre industry at home. Organisations like Women in Sustainable STEM are widening the door further.

We see it inside our own teams. The engineers commissioning a modular build in the DRC or testing a UPS in Randburg carry global standards and local knowledge in the same hands. That combination is hard to import.

A 1MW facility supports hundreds of construction roles and dozens of skilled operational ones. The infrastructure boom is also a careers boom.

Africa's digital future will be designed and run by Africans. That has always been the point.

Microsoft and G42 have paused a 1 billion dollar geothermal powered data centre in Kenya, with the country citing insufficient national power capacity.

This is the clearest signal of where the African AI boom actually narrows. Capital is flowing. Announcements keep landing. The constraint sits underneath all of it, in MW that can be delivered reliably.

A data centre without secured, stable power is a press release waiting on physics. The cooling, the GPUs, the connectivity all depend on energy arriving first and staying.

Operators who lock down power architecture early move from pipeline to production. The rest wait.

Across Africa, the projects that succeed will be the ones that solved energy before they broke ground.

South Africa's amount of days without load shedding is a genuine turnaround worth recognising.

Eskom's own medium term outlook tells the rest of the story. As ageing coal stations like Camden, Grootvlei and Hendrina come offline toward 2029, and demand climbs with data centre and industrial growth, the risk of outages returns.

Today's stability rests on operational discipline rather than a wave of new generation capacity. That distinction matters for anyone running mission critical sites. Uptime cannot depend on a grid that may tighten again within three years. On site backup, monitoring and redundancy turn a national risk into a managed one.

The quiet years are the right time to prepare for the loud ones.

04/08/2026

Africa holds 20% of the world's population and 0.6% of its data centre capacity. In the same week, the ADCA Economic Report put the continental market on a path to 9 billion dollars by 2029. Both figures are true at once.

That gap is the opportunity. Africa starts without the weight of legacy infrastructure, laying foundations with the latest power and cooling thinking already baked in, and skipping stages that mature markets are now struggling to unwind.

Decentralised power makes this possible. On site generation frees operators from waiting on national grids that were never built for this load. We have always believed the continent leapfrogs rather than follows. The smallest share of global capacity today is the widest runway for what comes next.
