Maiden voyages are amazing. For quite some time I, like most people, believed that boxing was just 2 guys getting into the ring to see who is the last man standing. I am in the process of training to get into MMA, and as such I personally know what it takes to train and to train hard. So when I started shooting these guys in the gym, I quickly realized how hard they have to work before they can get into the arena. I realized that this was not just about two men bashing each others brains out. No, there's so much more to it.
Each fighter must do so many things at the same time. Strategizing and finding the best and quickest way to overcome your opponent is the main thing a fighter does, but then there are so many other things that he must do. Ensure that he does not waste effort by throwing punches wildly, breathing to ensure he stays concious, overcoming fatigue and exhaustion. Fighting, like so many other things in life is first and foremost about overcoming your self, conquer yourself. Your own fears, insecurities, short comings. I could go on. If I were to sum it up, then I would say it is about being a man and learning to deal with the outcome, whatever that outcome will be. You wont win every fight, all you can do is bring your best self and trust that it is enough. At that moment the only people that matters are you, your opponent and ensuring you abide by the rules so that when it is all said and done, you can say that you have done your best.
Thanks to Manni and the boxers from BRD boxing academy for the privilege of being a part of the team on this night. I am humbled by the strength, perseverance and dedication of these boxers.
