GOING GREEN AS A BUSINESS:

Avoid confusing doing business in a green way with being a charity. Business is about making a profit, even with a socially minded approach to profit-making. Whatever changes your business makes to be green, always check that you remain competitive with non-green businesses. To stay successful, a green business must produce products or services that people want, that are well designed, appealing and work as stated.

Keep abreast of legislative changes and consumer concerns.
Run your business as a profitable concern; don't throw all caution to the wind to turn green. Do things by increments, or use the Japanese kaizen method, little by little, so that you know what works and what doesn't without destroying your company's financial resources.

Be wary of immature or ineffective technologies. Check thoroughly into the backgrounds of those selling green products for your company, especially where large sums of money are involved.
Ask lots of questions. Ask how the changes will improve your business. Ask how the products and services being promoted to you will deliver on what they promise.

Find out about the chain of production; you don't want to buy new items only to discover they're being made in another part of the world in cramped and deadly working conditions––your company's ethos must travel the whole way through from cradle-to-cradle.

Broad-based ownership schemes as part of a company’s ownership structure, can allow the company to make a significant contribution to the upliftment of previously disadvantaged communities in South Africa.

To prevent abuse, the Department of Trade and Industry has placed onerous structural and governance criteria on the setting up and ongoing management of these schemes.

While the expansion of social grants has brought much-needed relief for many trapped in poverty, lasting progress in the battle against poverty and its manifestations, requires accelerated economic growth through entrepreneurial development. Which cannot be achieved without the full participation of every sector of our economy. From government to the private sector to small medium enterprises. Each of us have a responsibility to "lift as we rise"

At this point in our nation we are sitting on a ticking time bomb with the horrifying statistic of 70% of our youth under the ages of 35 being unemployed. This implies the unpalatable truth that only 30% of South African youth will be active participants in building South African economy in the future. Not only that but our education curriculum at high school level has through the years deteriorated to the point that very few qualify for university, and all this backed by the mortifying truth that to those that...to do graduate even fewer find employment. Therefore as a nation we have upon us the urgency of finding a different way of achieving economic sustainability.

It is no secret that a large percentage of the unemployed 70% reside in high density areas which in our social landscape are the townships. If poverty eradication is going to be achieved, it would be through the social responsibility of actively nurturing and supporting the entrepreneurial dreams that exist on the concrete pavements of Soweto, dreams whose home is the corrugated iron shacks of Alexandra or the dusty streets of Tembisa. Our vision is to reach the custodians of these dreams in their backyards, not to spoon feed or babysit but to give a hand up through knowledge exchange and training through workshops. For if we ourselves do not change this world...let us at least spark the minds that will change this world.

One Corporate One Entrepreneur is an initiative that was started by a group of 5 young entrepreneurs who couldn't sit with hands on their heads and simply let things be. We have joined forces in the form of our expertise and resources to put together a series of training workshops, forums and speaking engagements which will run throughout the year. As we all know, it is the learners that inherit the wealth of the world while the learnered become beautifully prepared for a world that no longer exist. If entrepreneurs are going to succeed then education and learning has to be embraced in every form or shape.

"You can restore a man's dignity through empowerment, social grants won't" Steve Biko said.
