In South Africa, it is mandatory for a business to register for VAT if the total revenue in any consecutive twelve month period exceeded or is likely to exceed R1 million. For businesses with a turnover of under R1 million a year, registration for VAT is optional. You don't have to register as a VAT vendor, but you may if you want to.
