The Minerals Council South Africa is proud to sponsor and participate in the 2026 Land Rehabilitation Society of Southern Africa (LaRSSA) Conference, reaffirming our commitment to responsible and sustainable mine rehabilitation.

Led by Stephinah Mudau, Head: Environment, our delegation is engaging with industry and stakeholders on practical innovations to advance mine rehabilitation.

Under this year’s theme, “Land Rehabilitation Progress through Innovation,” the conference highlights the importance of innovative, collaborative and adaptive approaches to land rehabilitation, creating lasting environmental and socio-economic value beyond the life of a mine.

Stats SA’s latest data shows the mining and quarrying industry contracted by 3% in the second quarter, but the figure tells only part of the story. Minerals Council CEO Mzila Mthenjane joined Clement Manyathela on Radio 702 to unpack what’s driving the numbers and what lies ahead for the sector.

Mining remains cyclical and volatile, shaped by commodity prices and production capacity. The Minerals Council is also finalising an Investment and Growth Strategy focused on stimulating investment and unlocking sustainable growth for South African mining.

This work is critical to ensuring the sector continues to contribute to the economy, jobs and communities.

What can the mining industry learn from past mud rush incidents to strengthen prevention?

The message is clear: learning from incidents must translate into stronger risk management, effective controls and better prevention to protect mineworkers.

At the Mud Rush Day of Learning, Williams Joughin of SRK Consulting shared lessons from global case studies, while Howard Marsden of Ivanhoe Mines reflected on learnings from the Ekapa Mine incident and recovery.

As the day wrapped up, Chris Legodi of the Minerals Council South Africa expressed appreciation on behalf of the sector for the continued efforts of mining companies to strengthen safety in mining.

On 3 September, the Minerals Council South Africa will host a Mud Rush Day of Learning, bringing together mining stakeholders, technical specialists, regulators, service providers and practitioners to exchange practical insights, lessons learnt and leading practices.​
