This work was extremely dirty and covered in a dark brown residue. The work is on masonite and as a result the pigments became brittle and dry. This caused some flaking and loss. Once cleaned the work has been transformed from a dull bland oil to a work full of colour and life.

Here are the before & after photos of 3 works on paper that sustained water damage. The severe cockling of the paper is due to expansion within their frames. Framing directly to the edge and with glass touching a work is not advisable. The paper creased because there was nowhere to expand to. The last work sustained water damage many years ago and was covered in mildew. Some of these stains have become permanent. The work was lined for added support and to mend the damaged disintegrated sections of paper.

This beautiful oil was recently restored for a client. This was her great grandmother and had never been cleaned. This is about 150 years of dust, smoke and other impurities causing severe varnish discolouration over the years. As the varnish gets darker the colour fades away. It is important to know that the original pigments are protected underneath all this dirt. The work sustained some damage over the years causing holes and scratches. She cleaned up remarkably we as can be seen in the before & after photos.
