South Africa’s water crisis isn’t about scarcity—it’s about infrastructure.
At Infrastructure Africa, engineers highlighted a critical reality: nearly 47% of treated water is lost before reaching communities. That’s not just waste—it’s an estimated R15 billion annual loss to the economy.
Cities like Johannesburg are already feeling the strain, underscoring the urgent need for investment, maintenance, and smarter water management systems.
The good news? This is a man-made problem—which means it can be fixed with the right collaboration between government, industry, and infrastructure stakeholders.
A big thank you to for the coverage and for spotlighting this critical issue.

In 2025, investment in private generation hit R158 billion, with nearly 600 projects adding over 7 400 MW to the grid—driven largely by solar and wind.
A clear signal that private sector participation is key to strengthening energy security and accelerating the clean energy transition.

South Africa’s national energy regulator says investment in private power generation is now in the hundreds of billions of rands. The close to 600 new projects registered with Nersa in 2025 is the highest number in eight years and so too is their investment value, which is estimated at R158-billio...

Thank you to Business Day Times for interviewing one of our Infrastructure Africa speakers, Arthur Quphe, President of the Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession. In the interview, he highlighted that water infrastructure in South Africa is set to become an increasingly critical priority, as the region faces growing water stress driven by climate variability, rapid urbanisation, and the backlog of maintenance on existing water infrastructure.
