Carrie Pratt: Leadership, Learning & Change

Carrie Pratt: Leadership, Learning & Change This page is for people who recognise that sustainable change requires both inner and outer work, and who understand that both take courage.

This page is designed to be a place of nourishment and inspiration for people who want to make a positive difference in the world and who understand that that requires both the outer work of seeing – and changing – systems, and the inner work of changing self. It is for people who believe that creating a just world requires creativity. Requires seeing ‘old’ problems with new eyes. Requires venturi

ng out of the familiar and into the unknown, opening ourselves to new ideas and new perspectives, and allowing ourselves to be influenced by what we encounter...

It is for people who believe that the seeds of a new future are nurtured in the present moment. In the choices we make, in the ways we engage with one another, in the quality of our listening and of our presence. This page is for all those wise and wonderful people in the world who are making the road by walking...

Please join us for the first Let’s Talk Dialogue of 2026. As February is often called the month of love, let’s use this session to talk about love.

Minister and social activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said: “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” In an increasingly polarized world, let’s explore what it might mean to show up more often with love and compassion rather than judgment.

What helps us to stay grounded in love and what makes it hard? How do we hold our convictions without demonizing those we disagree with, dislike, or perceive as causing harm? Is that even possible, or desirable?

Let’s Talk is a shared space of deep listening, reflection, and honest dialogue. Everyone is welcome.

Please note that this year we will meet at the Makers Valley Studio in Victoria Yards It is diagonally across from the Changemaker Centre where we met last year. I will be outside to wave at you until we start at 10:00. To protect the flow of the dialogue, we won’t be able to admit anyone after 10:15.

Emily Dickinson wrote:
“Not knowing when the dawn will comeI open every door.”

In a world badly in need of a new dawn, may 2026 be a year of opening doors. Opening doors to regenerative practices and ways of living. Opening doors to economic systems that support the well being of all people, animals and the planet. Opening doors to lives of (re)connection to nature and to each other. Opening doors to greater love and compassion and to a willingness to act to make those qualities manifest in the world.

May we open doors that lead to a deeper understanding - and healing - of ourselves and of others. Doors that reconnect us to the wisdom of our bodies and to the wisdom of our ancestors. Doors that lead us to discover what is waiting to emerge through us into the world. Doors that lead us to the more just and joyous future we long for.

Happy New Year. With hope. With love. And with an always open door. ❤️

Please join us for the final Let’s Talk dialogue of 2025. 😊

We end each year with my favorite activity: story-sharing. Why? Because one of the many reasons that we find it hard as South Africans to effect positive change is that we do not really know one another. Too many of us live, work and socialise primarily with people whose experiences are much like our own. A powerful way to bridge the distance between us is to share our stories.

Stories spark connection. They expand our world by inviting us into the experiences and perspectives of people whose lives are different to our own. This month’s dialogue invites us to expand our worlds by sharing and listening to each others’ stories. Let’s Talk!

*Please note that to respect the process, we do not admit participants after 10:15*

It’s important that we move beyond the conversation on sustainability and start talking about regeneration. It’s no longer enough to merely sustain the environment or social systems as they are. We must actively regenerate ecosystems that have been degraded. We need to ask: Are we leaving the world - people and planet - better off than when we started?

Regeneration goes beyond reducing harm; it’s about healing, restoring and enhancing the systems that sustain life. These principles are already being applied in a range of disciplines including education, architecture, farming, finance / investing, economics, business and leadership.

Deep thanks to Thomas Linders of Waaipoort Diaries Farm; Siphiwe Sithole of African Marmalade Farm and Nonhlanhla Moroenyane (Chef Noni) for helping participants on the GIBS Nexus Leadership Programme explore how we can lead—and live—in regenerative ways.

As Spring unfolds around us I am reminded of the words of Anais Nin: “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”

Join us for the September Let’s Talk dialogue to share stories of times in our lives when we took a risk to blossom. Times when we chose to move away from stuckness and try something new. And - perhaps - to share the ways in which we dream of blossoming now.

Let’s Talk about what Spring looks like in our lives and how we can create the conditions for blossoming- for ourselves, for each other and for the country.

📚 Help Build an African Literature Library for Kliptown Youth

At the Kliptown Youth Program in Soweto, young people are hungry for stories that reflect who they are and where they come from. Every child deserves to see themselves in the books they read — to find role models, dream bigger, and imagine new possibilities.

You can help us put these stories into their hands. By purchasing a book from our wishlist, you’ll be planting seeds of inspiration for the next generation of readers, dreamers, and visionaries.

✨ How to donate a book:
1. Click on the wishlist link below.
2. Select a book to purchase.
3. At checkout, choose delivery to Hyde Park Corner.
4. NB: Enter [email protected] instead of your own email so that we can be notified when the books arrive.

Together, we can create a library filled with African voices and stories — a space where children can see themselves reflected and their imaginations set free.

Some patterns protect us. Others hold us back, keeping us stuck in ways of being that no longer serve us, our communities, or our world. But there are moments when we break the cycle. Moments when we do something differently and new possibilities open up.

Join us for our August Let’s Talk dialogue where we’ll share personal stories of breaking patterns - in our inner thoughts and beliefs; in our relationships; and in our families, workplaces and communities. We’ll reflect on what made those changes possible and what happened as a result.

Together, we’ll explore how small, courageous acts of change can ripple outward, challenging the deeper patterns that shape our systems and society.

From What is to What If….

In times like these - especially in times like these - it’s vital to remember that imagining a better world, and believing it is possible, is an act of hope. Imagination feeds the soul and fuels action. As the poet Rilke wrote:

“You must give birth to your images. They are the future waiting to be born. Fear not the strangeness you feel. The future must enter you long before it happens.”

Join us for our July dialogue where we do something a little different. Inspired by Rob Hopkins (author of From What Is To What If) we’ll do some collective dreaming about the future. Let’s gather around the question ‘What if…?’ and allow the seeds of a better future to enter us. What if….. we let ourselves imagine without limits? 😊

*Happy Mother’s Day!*

At this challenging moment in the world, it feels especially fitting to celebrate the spirit of mothering which births and nurtures possibility in the world.

Today - and every day - I honour all the mothers among us: those among us who, regardless of age or gender, are giving life to new ideas, new possibilities, new systems and new ways of being that will lead us into a better, more equitable future.

So today, take a moment to reflect on what possibility needs to be nurtured - in yourself, in your family, in the country, in the world - to nurture a consciousness of wholeness, generosity, kindness, and connection. And then commit to the loving task of bringing it to life.

The world needs all of us to be mothers.

*Speaking Up*
In a world where we increasingly witness individuals and institutions capitulating to the demands of power, what does it take to speak up? To share our truth—even, and perhaps especially, when it challenges the status quo?

Join us for our May dialogue as we reflect on the moments we’ve chosen silence and the moments we’ve found our voice. On the moments we have made space for others to challenge and on the times when we have pressure others to ‘go with the flow’. Together, we’ll explore what holds us back, what helps us step forward, and how we can support ourselves—and one another—to speak up.

How do we create spaces where diverse and divergent perspectives can be shared, heard, and learned from?
