ENERGY NEWS & UPDATES | Why your solar system may still be using grid power to heat your geyser⚡

Going solar doesn’t automatically mean your geyser will stop using electricity from the grid.

MyBroadband article highlights an important consideration for homeowners: a typical electric geyser can draw around 3–4kW while heating water. When heating happens in the early morning or evening, when solar generation is low and household demand is high - the system may rely on grid power.

The article also points out that simply adding a geyser to a home solar system can require additional inverter capacity, battery storage and solar panels. Geyser timers can help shift heating into daylight hours, but they may not account for other household loads running at the same time.

The takeaway?
Solar isn’t just about how many panels you have. System design, load management and choosing the right water-heating technology all matter.
For homeowners looking to reduce their reliance on grid electricity, a properly designed solar water-heating system can be a more targeted approach to tackling one of the biggest energy users in the home.

ENERGY NEWS & UPDATES | WHAT SOUTH AFRICAN SOLAR USERS NEED TO KNOW ☀️⚡

A recent BusinessTech report has highlighted an important development for homeowners who are moving away from traditional grid electricity.
Here’s what caught our attention:
🔹 Going off-grid may not mean going completely “charge-free”.
Thaba Chweu Municipality has received approval for a R582.64 monthly levy on certain properties where the electricity network remains available, but the customer is no longer connected.

🔹 The electricity landscape is changing.
Eskom has acknowledged that increased self-generation, including solar, and growing electricity wheeling are contributing to declining grid demand.

🔹 Electricity tariffs remain a key concern.
Eskom’s 2026/27 tariff increase was close to 9%, with another increase planned for 2027/28. BusinessTech reports that electricity tariffs have risen dramatically since 2008.

🔹 Solar is becoming part of a bigger energy conversation.
As more homes and businesses generate some or all of their own electricity, understanding grid connection rules, municipal tariffs, SSEG requirements and your actual energy needs is becoming increasingly important.

The takeaway?
Solar isn't simply about putting panels on a roof and switching off the grid.
It’s about choosing the right system for your home or business, understanding the regulations that apply to you, and finding ways to manage your energy costs more strategically.

📌 Thinking about solar? Make sure you understand the system, the savings and the rules before you invest.
