Children's Memorial Institute The Children's Memorial Institute is an entity comprising of about 30 separate Organizations, mostly

The Children's Memorial Institute is currently functioning as a multitude of separate but complementary services that are provided mostly but not exclusively through NGOs. There are at present several NGO organizations including governmental institutions. The commonality of these NGOs is that their services are primarily if not wholly aimed at children and in most cases children who have special n

eeds. These specialized services are characterized in the main by their conspicuous absence in the public sector hospitals. Even the academic hospitals with paediatric departments present often lack these services. The services offered by CMI are thus filling a gap and meeting the needs of these children and their families. The vast majority of the recipients of the services are from disadvantaged backgrounds and similar services in the private sector are either non-existent or are unaffordable. There is a long history of service provision to the children of Johannesburg by this institution going back several decades. The services provided by the organizations present are not only supported by donor funding but indeed by the Departments of Social Development, Basic Education and Department of Health (mostly through some maintenance via the Department of Infrastructural Development). The organizations providing the services are mostly dealing with issues relating to the psychosocial well being of children and others directly dealing with heath and few with educational issues. Today 7 officials from City of Joburg City Power arrived at the Children's Memorial Institute with 2 police officers to switch off our electricity 😒 We are not entirely sure why these measures were necessary when we are merely a group of 22 caring NGOs and a special needs school, but we now have no electricity again!! Sadly as we are NOT the account holders, we have no way to resolve this issue. Only the Gauteng Health Department can solve this challenge by paying the outstanding R44million they owe the City for their Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital Laundry. We would be interested to understand how the 5 hospitals and 13 clinics that this laundry services will operate without clean laundry, bedding, scrubs etc? We will let you know if anything changes. In the meantime, spare a thought for the over 2000 children who visit our campus DAILY for education, food, therapy and support πŸ’™

Hi all, an excellent article by Anna Cox that details our difficult predicament with the City of Joburg and Gauteng Provincial Government. Let’s hope this makes them think twice before randomly switching off our water and electricity πŸ’™

Three Gauteng departments and the City of Johannesburg are locked in a billing dispute that could paralyse 22 NGOs that care for children.

Please join us on Friday 11th September at the CMI Spring Market from 11am to 3pm, we will also be launching our new 🌼

We have just been contacted by Deputy Minister Steve Letsike for Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, who advised that the Deputy Mayor of the City of Joburg Loyiso Lugayeni-Masuku has intervened and asked City Power to switch us back on. So we have power again!! πŸ’‘

We are very grateful for this intervention and look forward to engaging with our government partners in support the children and communities we serve πŸ’™

The City of Joburg has once again switched off the electricity to the Children's Memorial Institute!

They claim the Gauteng Health Department owes them R45 million for electricity for their Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital Laundry (which is on our property), but Health disputes this amount and will not pay!

In the meantime our vulnerable, disabled and neurodiverse children must suffer. More than 2000 CHILDREN WILL LOSE DAILY ACCESS TO EDUCATION, SUPPORT, CARE & FOOD! THIS IS A HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION!!

Thousands of Gauteng children will be impacted by this decision to switch off our electricity:
- Childline Gauteng fields 800 calls daily from children experiencing abuse, neglect or exploitation.
- has 365+ daily learners.
- The Dental Clinic sees over 50 children daily with acute dental issues which can be life threatening.
- ACFS Community Education provides 13 000 meals to children daily across Gauteng.
- Afrika Tikkun Foundation has 700 daily learners who receive 2000 cooked meals.
- Daycare for 18 significantly disabled children and training for families at Malamulele Onward.
- The Teddy Bear Foundation South Africa protecting child victims of abuse.
- Fight With Insight has 140 children accessing daily meals and psych-social support.
- Johannesburg Parent & Child Counselling Centre - JPCCC offers daily counselling to children and families.
- Lefika La Phodiso - Community Art Counselling & Training Institute caring for 60+ children daily with meal and therapeutic support.
- Thusanani Children's Foundation providing therapy to disabled children.
- Sensory-Space provides therapeutic sensory support for neurodiverse and traumatised children.
- Abba Specialist Adoption & Social Services supporting over 100 families in the area.
- Hotel Hope providing homes for more than 36 orphaned and abandoned babies.
- emergency accommodation for children at risk.
- 100 children attend ECD and after care at , Innovation Of Excellence and .
- Child rights advocacy work from Gauteng Children's Rights Committee, , , Babies Matter, and Courage Child Protection & Empowerment.

We touch more than 700 000 Childrens lives every year through the Children’s Memorial Institute! Gauteng Government and the City of Johannesburg know this, but have still decided to SWITCH US OFF! Shame on them πŸ˜’πŸ’™
