Let’s Connect: Mining Mondays with Victor Industrial Equipment | Respect the Bend

Trackless and Type 41 cables are designed to move, but flexibility does not mean unlimited bending.
When a cable is bent too tightly, its outer layers are stretched while its inner layers are compressed. This can distort insulation, stress conductors and screens, weaken the outer sheath, and shorten the cable’s service life.
But what do “4 × D” and “5 × D” mean?
“D” is the cable’s actual overall outside diameter.
For Type 41 cable:
• Fixed installation: minimum bend radius = 4 × D
• Flexible operation: minimum bend radius = 5 × D
For example, if the cable has an overall diameter of 50 mm:
• Fixed: 4 × 50 mm = 200 mm minimum radius
• Flexible: 5 × 50 mm = 250 mm minimum radius
The bend radius is measured to the cable’s centreline. Because 16 mm² and 25 mm² describe conductor size, not the complete cable diameter, the manufacturer’s actual outside-diameter specification must always be checked.
Victor Tip: Never estimate bend radius by appearance or conductor size alone. Confirm the cable’s actual overall diameter and follow the manufacturer’s specified installation requirements.
How does your operation control bend radius along cable routes and at equipment connection points? Share your experience in the comments; practical knowledge from the people doing the work is what Let’s Connect: Mining Mondays is all about.

Let's Connect: Mining Mondays with Victor Industrial Equipment | Where Reliability Begins

Last week, we looked at how something as small as a trapped air pocket inside a cable joint can lead to partial discharge, insulation deterioration, and eventual failure. But reliable cable joints don’t begin when the connection is made. They begin with preparation.
Imprecise cuts, damaged insulation, dirt, moisture, or grease may seem like small details during cable preparation, but each can introduce a weak point into the completed joint.
In mining environments, where cables operate under demanding electrical, mechanical, and environmental conditions, those small mistakes can have much bigger consequences.
Careful preparation helps protect the integrity of the joint, reduce the risk of premature failure and ultimately support safer, more reliable operations.
Victor Tip: Take your time during preparation. Once the joint is complete, some mistakes cannot simply be undone.
Question for you: Which stage of cable preparation do you believe requires the most attention to detail?
Share your experience in the comments — practical knowledge from the people doing the work is what Let’s Connect: Mining Mondays is all about.

Let's Connect: Mining Mondays with Victor Industrial Equipment

Mining is an industry built on knowledge, experience, and connection. With “Let’s Connect: Mining Mondays”, Victor Industrial Equipment aims to share practical insights, technical knowledge and useful information that matters to the people working in our industry.
Every Monday, we will explore different (or similar) topics, ask questions, share knowledge, and encourage conversation that benefits the entire industry.

Did You Know? Air is the Worst Insulator Underground: Tiny air pockets inside a cable joint can lead to partial discharge, causing treeing, insulation deterioration and ultimately cable failure.
Understanding these hidden defects before they become failures is key to improving mine reliability, reducing downtime, and protecting valuable equipment.

Follow our Let's Connect: Mining Mondays series for practical electrical connector and cable jointing insights from the Victor team.
