The day commemorates the decision by African Heads of State and Government, to transition from the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to the African Union, as issued in the Sirte Declaration which called for the establishment of an African Union. With the aim of accelerating the process of continental integration to enable Africa to play its rightful role in the global economy while addressing multifaceted social, economic and political problems compounded as they were by certain negative aspects of globalisation.

Mlamuli is the Commissioner of Financial Literacy and Nano Economics at the Reset Global UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Advisory Board and is tasked with spreading financial literacy throughout Africa. He is the author of Winning the Money Game – A Guide to Financial Well-Being. The book is an authentic African story that is embedded with financial wisdom.

He co-authored the World Economic Forum Global Shapers Africa 80 Book: Transformation through Collaboration, which had contributions from 80 global shapers from over 30 African countries. The Africa 80 book won The Best Collaborative Title at PaWaR in London.

In 2013, Mlamuli was the recipient of the financial literacy advocate award in the Future Leaders National Awards. In 2019, Mlamuli was selected as one of twenty young African thought leaders and social entrepreneurs to attend the Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD VII).
