Today is Earth Day.
And while the world speaks about sustainability, recycling, and reducing waste…
I’ve been focused on one question:
How do we design systems that actually work for the realities of where people live?
Because sustainability is not just about intention.
It’s about implementation.
I am Kopano Makino, founder of AUKODesigns, and I specialise in industrial design that translates ideas into scalable, manufacturable, real-world solutions.
What I’ve developed is a modular refill & return system designed specifically for African township environments where space is limited, infrastructure is fragmented, and affordability is everything.
This system is built for:
• Spaza store integration
• Decentralised refill networks
• Reusable container ecosystems
• Cartridge-based distribution
• Circular economy scalability
This is not just about reducing plastic.
It’s about redesigning how products move, how people access them, and how businesses operate from the ground up.
The truth is simple:
There is no better way to evolve sustainable systems than through intentional, human-centred industrial design.
The well of ideas is infinite.
My role is to bring the right ones into reality at the highest standard, aligned with global manufacturing, but rooted in the lived African experience.
On this Earth Day, I’m not just thinking about the planet.
