It is important that we acknowledge and stand together on important issues facing our communities and planet. World Health Day 2022 will focus global attention on urgent actions needed to keep humans and the planet healthy and foster a movement to create societies focused on well-being. We all have a part to play.

Often referred to as the invisible orientation, as*xuality is generally defined as not experiencing any kind of s*xual attraction. Various studies suggest that between 1-2% of the world’s population identify as as*xual.

This orientation is often ignored, misunderstood or under-discussed in our relentless effort to label and box each other rather than recognising that each and every one of us is unique.
Love can exist without s*x and we recognise the individual rights and freedoms of every human being to embrace who they are without fear. 💜🖤

Congratulations to all the companies who participated in the 2021 SAWEI. Pleased to announce the results this evening and congratulate all the participants for taking LGBT+ inclusion seriously! Onwards and upwards!

The South African LGBT+ Management Forum (The Forum) is pleased to share the results for the 2021 South African Workplace Equality Index (SAWEI).

SAWEI provides companies in South Africa with a means to measure their progress against independently determined and research-based best practice regarding LBGT+ inclusion. It allows companies to identify their relative strengths and areas for improvement within a clearly structured framework.

Now in its third edition, 23 companies completed SAWEI in full, with 7 companies competing for the first time. In total these companies employ 161 155 people and it was encouraging to see a wide spread of companies across sectors participating this year, particularly amongst major employers including banks and retailers.

The participants this year scored higher than participants in 2018 and 2019. We are optimistic that this is indicative of a South African workplace that is becoming more LGBT+ inclusive. All companies that have been tiered can be considered leaders in their field for LGBT+ inclusion.

The structure of the SAWEI mirrors the Forum’s framework of LGBT+ inclusion in the workplace, which consists of six elements that address both the ‘structures’ and ‘behaviours’ within a company - both of which are critical to workplace inclusion. The 2021 survey had 18 questions and provided a point scale as per previous surveys in order to provide participants with a useful comparison to help track and monitor progress year on year.

The SAWEI is the continent’s only index measuring levels of LGBT+ inclusion in the workplace, and sits alongside similar indices in Australia, Hong Kong, the USA, UK and Canada. All companies who participated should be commended for their willingness to participate and seek independent feedback as they progress on their inclusion journey.

After a few technical delays, we are very excited that SAWEI 2021 is up and running. The team at Traction is delighted to be partnering with The Forum in this important work for the LGBT+ community. Creating inclusive workplaces and communities requires action and resolve- and most importantly allies to the cause. Our work centre’s around equipping and enabling organisations and their internal employee networks to take greater accountability to lead the inclusion charge across all diversity pillars. We urge companies to get involved and see how they are tracking by completing SAWEI 2021. Contact us for further information and support. The South African LGBT+ Management Forum

Have South Africans become so accustomed to violence that we have become desensitised to the brutality members of the LGBTI+ community face each and every day? Surely not?! Check out this article from Mambaonline
