South Africa’s FMD crisis has demanded vaccination at a scale and speed far removed from normal preventive animal health programmes. While these are far from ideal circumstances, they have provided an important opportunity to gather real field evidence under South African production conditions.

Working with veterinarians, producers and producer organisations, V-Plan has been monitoring BIOAFTOGEN® SAT1, SAT2, SAT3 vaccination across commercial dairy, commercial beef, feedlot, and communal cattle populations.

Argentina’s experience with Foot-and-Mouth Disease showed that successful control depends on more than vaccination alone.

Following the major FMD outbreak in 2001, a coordinated response brought together vaccination, surveillance, biosecurity, vaccine quality, and collaboration between the public and private sectors. Within 11 months, 65 million cattle had undergone two rounds of vaccination, helping bring the outbreak under control and laying the foundations for a long-term disease control strategy.

Two million doses of our Bioaftogen FMD vaccine have arrived in South Africa and are now ready for distribution to producers, marking another important step in strengthening the country’s FMD response and livestock sector resilience.

The shipment represents the first tranche of an additional 4.5 million doses announced by Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS), with 970,000 doses already pre-ordered by producers through their veterinarians before the vaccine had even cleared the port.

Through our collaboration with RMIS, we continue to bring Biogénesis Bagó’s global experience in FMD prevention and control closer to South African producers, helping strengthen access to critical animal health solutions and supporting greater preparedness across the livestock sector.

The best way to respond to an animal health emergency is to be prepared before it happens.

We welcomed Brazil’s Minister of AgriBiogenesisBagovestock (MAPA), André de Paula, and representatives from the Paraná Institute of Technology (TECPAR) at our Garín facility (Argentina) for the official handover ceremony of Brazil’s National Antigen Bank for Emergency Response to Foot-and-Mouth Disease.

An antigen bank is a strategic reserve that enables the rapid formulation of vaccines in the event of an outbreak, ensuring timely access to critical animal health response tools.

This resource was established to strengthen Brazil’s preparedness and rapid response capacity for potential foot-and-mouth disease emergencies and is part of the long-term agreement between Biogénesis Bagó, MAPA, and TECPAR.

The initiative brings together planning, technological innovation, and public-private collaboration to further strengthen animal health protection and the resilience of Brazil’s livestock production.

Staying ahead of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) means staying ahead of the virus itself. We are proud to share that a recent independent heterologous challenge trial conducted by the prestigious Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (FAO reference center) has demonstrated that BIOAFTOGEN® SAT1 provides robust protection against the pandemic SAT1 topotype III FMD virus.

This study represents the first global challenge-study evidence of cross-protection against this emerging strain, showcasing 86% protection after just a single dose, and reaching 100% protection following a two-dose schedule.

Circulating field strains frequently mutate and differ antigenically from the strains included in standard vaccines. Demonstrating high-level protection against a heterologous (different) strain provides critical, real-world proof of cross-protection. These results reinforce the vital role that high-potency, rigorously tested vaccines play in global FMD preparedness and disease-control strategies.
