Summer travel and social media - is it safe to share? 📷
Minimal Risk Consultancy Limited shared this guidance recently and it's worth repeating for travelling principals, as managing a digital footprint is now as much a security consideration as physical movement.
As European summer travel begins, a reminder on safe travel risk management - a photo posted from a hotel or restaurant may now be geolocated within minutes.
Technology has evolved, and AI tools can take a handful of seemingly harmless holiday pictures, a balcony view or local dish and pinpoint exactly which street, hotel and potentially the floor the picture was taken.
AI-powered geolocation risks are widely known, but cases still happen, making it a good time to review your travel risk management.
Indistinguishable background details such as a tile pattern or railing design are now identifiable signals used to figure out where someone is. Real-time location data turns a hotel, restaurant or yacht into a possible target.
This can be a substantial security issue for principals, executives and high-profile families.
Practical steps before and during the trip:
▪️ Private socials
Make accounts private. Audit followers, and decline requests from unknown profiles
▪️ Remove locations
Turn off geotags and GPS sharing on all social apps before you travel
▪️ Sensitivity checks
Don't share itineraries, flight details, or photos of travel documents
▪️ Avoid live check-ins
Avoid naming hotels, restaurants or specific venues in real time. Announcing a location, even casually, makes it easier for someone to follow or observe
▪️ No Company info
Visible meeting rooms, badges or documents in the background of a photo can breach company policy and compromise commercial confidentiality
▪️ VPN
Use a VPN on public Wi-Fi in airports, hotels and cafés
▪️ Discuss beforehand
Brief family members, including children, anyone in the travelling party can become an accidental leak.
▪️ Post after, not during
The safest time to share is once the trip is over or you've moved on from the location
Understanding the risks and minimising the live digital footprint is now a standard element of travel risk management and is essential for principals and their teams travelling internationally this summer.
