Summer travel and social media - is it safe to share? 📷

Minimal Risk Consultancy Limited shared this guidance recently and it's worth repeating for travelling principals, as managing a digital footprint is now as much a security consideration as physical movement.

As European summer travel begins, a reminder on safe travel risk management - a photo posted from a hotel or restaurant may now be geolocated within minutes.

Technology has evolved, and AI tools can take a handful of seemingly harmless holiday pictures, a balcony view or local dish and pinpoint exactly which street, hotel and potentially the floor the picture was taken.

AI-powered geolocation risks are widely known, but cases still happen, making it a good time to review your travel risk management.

Indistinguishable background details such as a tile pattern or railing design are now identifiable signals used to figure out where someone is. Real-time location data turns a hotel, restaurant or yacht into a possible target.

This can be a substantial security issue for principals, executives and high-profile families.

Practical steps before and during the trip:

▪️ Private socials
Make accounts private. Audit followers, and decline requests from unknown profiles

▪️ Remove locations
Turn off geotags and GPS sharing on all social apps before you travel

▪️ Sensitivity checks
Don't share itineraries, flight details, or photos of travel documents

▪️ Avoid live check-ins
Avoid naming hotels, restaurants or specific venues in real time. Announcing a location, even casually, makes it easier for someone to follow or observe

▪️ No Company info
Visible meeting rooms, badges or documents in the background of a photo can breach company policy and compromise commercial confidentiality

▪️ VPN
Use a VPN on public Wi-Fi in airports, hotels and cafés

▪️ Discuss beforehand
Brief family members, including children, anyone in the travelling party can become an accidental leak.

▪️ Post after, not during
The safest time to share is once the trip is over or you've moved on from the location

Understanding the risks and minimising the live digital footprint is now a standard element of travel risk management and is essential for principals and their teams travelling internationally this summer.

Today is Youth Day.

Fifty years ago on 16 June 1976, young people walked out of their classrooms in Soweto and refused to be ignored. Half a century on, the day is marked in their name.

The best way we know to honour it is by looking forward, and mentoring the next generation of operatives.

Our CPO internship provides an opportunity to newly qualified CPO's to be paired with experienced CPOs and puts them on real operations from day one, learning the judgment that only comes from working alongside people who've done it for years.

Arcfyre Close Protection Internship ⭐

Kyle Dawson joined our internship programme earlier this year, designed specifically for newly qualified CPOs to get hands-on experience to build a career in Close Protection.

Let’s hear from Kyle.

What first drew you to the security sector?

‘Growing up, I had a vivid imagination, and I came to realise that people are rarely defined only by what is immediately visible. Forms of abstraction are more prevalent than the very things they’re abstracted from; people project images, intentions, and versions of themselves that often conceal more than they reveal. That understanding is what first drew me toward the security sector.’

What's at the heart of good protection work, in your view?

‘What appeals to me most is the balance between perception and action. A good protection professional must be grounded in reality while also understanding the human patterns and behaviours that exist beneath it.

To me, that is the essence of personal security work: narrowing the gap between the known and the unknown and making uncertainty just a little more manageable.’

How would you like your role to progress?

‘I want to build experience across different environments and continue refining both the practical and psychological aspects of the profession. As I progress in the sector, I hope to take on greater responsibility, strengthen my leadership abilities, and earn a reputation for professionalism, reliability, and discretion.’

What are your career ambitions in the security sector?

‘My long-term ambition is to develop into a well-rounded protection professional who is trusted not only for technical competence, but also for judgement, discipline, and the ability to remain composed under pressure.’ I have always been entrepreneurially driven and ultimately, I aim to build my own company within the security sector.’

What are you hoping to gain from your time with Arcfyre, and what does that growth look like to you?

‘I will learn from experienced professionals, develop a strong operational foundation, and understanding the standards required to lead effectively in this industry.

I see mentorship, experience, and continuous growth as essential parts of my personal growth. I am thankful to the Arcfyre International group for giving me the opportunity for self-improvement!’

Every day on the range is a day of learning.

Repetition under realistic conditions is what turns training into instinct, and instinct into the consistency our clients rely on.

This is what continuous development looks like at ground level.

Day in the Life - Project Coordinator

Emma is a Project Coordinator at Arcfyre International, a complex role balancing movements of live projects and operational teams across multiple countries and different time zones.

She began in Business Development and progressed into Protective Operations.

Five years in, here's what she had to say:

You joined Arcfyre from a different industry - how has your background shaped the way you approach your role?

‘I was previously working in the hospitality industry and co-running a business with my husband. Hospitality teaches you great soft skills - noticing when something isn't right or when someone is having a bad day. Learning empathy, and understanding when just listening is all that is required.

Hospitality pushes you to strive for perfection, the first time, every time.

In Protective Ops, I coordinate support across multiple locations with lots of moving parts, delayed flights, missing luggage, changing schedules, and the occasional last-minute curveball. A sense of humour helps - sometimes you just have to smile, shake it off, make a plan and keep things moving.

I also learned a lot about the value of strong relationships. And that an almond cappuccino with one sugar will mostly always set me on the right path again.’

How has your understanding of the industry shifted since you started?

‘What some people may see as a simple manpower operation has so many more influences and contributing factors sitting beneath the surface.

We take into account regional understanding, principal preferences and comfort, duty of care. The role requires empathy for clients, operators and colleagues because at the end of the day, we all want the same result - a safe, successful project.’

Was there a turning point where your role changed?

‘Moving out of Business Development and into the Protective Ops space. Here I've had the pleasure of getting to know our clients, operators and the world in a more ‘operationally in-depth’ way. At the same time caring for my young daughter - great for the nightshift/after-hours responses while she was still learning to sleep through the night!’

If you could sit down with yourself on day one and offer one piece of advice, what would it be?

‘Calm down, go to the gym when you can and breathe. I do think there's a beautiful tenacity in what we do. We plan and do the same thing every day, but no two days are ever the same. It’s built on supportive relationships, understanding, patience and an unwavering sense of accountability and integrity.’

A safe and secure working environment is fundamental to business and organisational success.

For any organisation requiring staff to travel - particularly into complex, developing or emerging markets - a risk assessment is not optional. It is a duty of care, and a non-negotiable responsibility.

Risk assessments exist to ensure that potential threats are identified, understood and mitigated before travel occurs. Most organisations need to plan how best to protect assets alongside their people and reputation. Across the Arcfyre Group, four key measures form effective traveller risk management:

🌍 Destination Analysis
Understanding the local risks of a region: terrorism threats, crime levels, corruption, natural disaster exposure, political risk, protest or service delivery demonstration and human rights conditions. In-country risk and threat assessments make sure travellers are prepared, protected and not arriving into the unknown.

📊 Intelligence Reporting
Our Global Security Operations Centre (GSOC) operates 24/7, providing critical support to all operational field staff, monitoring intelligence, crime trends and activity and events in the regions where our clients operate. The analysts track local and global developments through verified ‘on-ground’ resources, open source and news media, anticipating disruptions before they escalate.

⚠️ Emergency Response
Establishing protocols for crisis management, evacuation procedures, and business continuity in advance, so that when something goes wrong, the response planning is already in place.

📕 Security Training
Equipping travellers with situational awareness, local context, cultural understanding and practical risk mitigation strategies before departure. Briefings should be informed by current intelligence and tailored to the specific destination, reinforced by scenario planning that anticipates the most likely contingencies.

Comprehensive risk assessments are designed to pull every element of the security operation into one integrated system, protecting personnel, assets, information and reputation - providing reassurance to those travelling.

Operational in more than 60 countries across four continents, Arcfyre International and Minimal Risk Consultancy deliver bespoke protective, consulting and journey management services, supporting Fortune 100 companies, non-governmental organisations, philanthropic foundations and high net worth individuals.

When your organisation reviews its traveller risk framework, the Arcfyre Group is ready to support.

Freedom Day marks the anniversary of South Africa's 1994 democratic elections - the moment that shaped the country we operate in today.

It's an opportunity to acknowledge how much that foundation matters to the way we do business and not to take it for granted. Building diverse teams of talent, trading openly, and future growth rests on the democratic framework established more than three decades ago.

Wishing our colleagues, partners and communities a meaningful Freedom Day.

Caution is shaping this year’s travel trends

Travel intentions, preferences and barriers all point towards a cautious outlook for travellers, one who is increasingly asking ‘how safe is it to go there?’

🏠 Close to home
There is a growing preference for domestic trips. Australia is shifting away from long-haul travel in favour of neighbouring Asian countries and Canada is keen to remain in-country. Familiar environments reduce perceived risk, improve response times in emergencies, and offer a stronger sense of security.

Geopolitical concerns and time-constraints are deterring further travel, but 52% mainly say high costs limit travel, with the US booking fewer trips despite eagerness to travel.

📊 Trends
Travellers are leaning towards personalised and experience-led itineraries, with a growing interest in semi-package trips, and rising demand for wellness and slow travel. This could reflect travellers desiring guidance with the flexibility of freedom.

👍 Europe Popularity
Interest in Europe remains strong, largely due to its reputation for stability, infrastructure, and accessibility, with many travellers considering a trip in 2026 to explore its nature and cultural variety.

🦺 Safety
Europe continues to rank highest globally on safety, with 51% stating safety as the main reason when choosing a European holiday. Political stability, climate hazards and personal safety are all taken into account - with Europe consistently coming out top as a safe and reliable destination.

💻 Business Travel
Business travel has increased, particularly so for Australia and South Korea.

Finances, economic uncertainty and potential recessions are shaping travel movements of 2026. With domestic travel gaining popularity, it’s a cost-effective way to explore new places, support the local economy and for those to experience their own country from a fresh perspective.

Travellers are becoming more informed, more selective, and far less willing to compromise when it comes to risk.

Today is a very special day for us.

We are incredibly proud to announce that this year marks our 22nd anniversary in business 🎉

Over the past 22 years, we have had the privilege of serving thousands of clients, navigating an ever-evolving landscape, and building relationships that have stood the test of time. None of this would have been possible without the incredible people who have been part of our journey - from day one to today.

As we pause to celebrate this milestone, our CEO Jared Higgins describes it best:

‘22 Years and Counting! 🎉

Twenty-two years ago, I took a leap of faith and started this company with a vision and a whole lot of determination. Today I am filled with immense gratitude.

To our clients - you are the reason we exist. Your loyalty and trust have meant everything, and I never take that for granted. To our partners, thank you for believing in what we're building. And to our incredible team, the heart of this organisation, your hard work and passion are what make all of this possible. I am honoured to work alongside each of you.

Twenty-two years is no small feat, and I don't celebrate it lightly. We've faced challenges, embraced change, and come out stronger.

As CEO of what is now a very customer-centric, purpose-built and truly a global group that is incredibly passionate about keeping people safe, more than I ever imagined 22 years ago, I can confidently say that the best is still ahead. We are more energised, more focused, and more committed than ever to serving you and growing this company with purpose.

Thank you for 22 amazing years. Here’s to many more’ 🥂
