A natural swimming pond designed to become part of the landscape.

This is one of our favourite projects – a natural swimming pond that blends seamlessly into its surroundings while creating a thriving, chemical-free swimming ecosystem.

3 things we love about this project:

✔️ A river you can follow.
The swimming pond flows into a 60-metre stream, which meanders through the garden before reaching a second swim pond that doubles as a beautiful wetland filtration system.

✔️ A dramatic natural waterfall.
A 2-metre waterfall cascades over large natural boulders, adding movement, sound, and natural oxygenation while creating a stunning focal point.

✔️ It gets better with time.
Completed in September 2022, these photos were taken just after commissioning. Although the engineering was complete, the real transformation was only just beginning. As the wetland plants establish and mature, they create an even richer ecosystem and an increasingly beautiful place to swim.

Natural pools aren’t just designed to look beautiful on day one - they’re designed to evolve with the landscape, becoming more vibrant and biodiverse with every season.

Would you choose a natural swimming pond like this over a traditional swimming pool? We’d love to know your favourite feature.

From fire pit to natural swimming pool.

This Rocklands property, near Simon’s Town, had no other suitable position for a pool, but the existing fire pit offered an exceptional setting with uninterrupted views over the sea. The client’s brief was clear: create a natural swimming pool that felt more like a coastal rock pool than a conventional pool.

The main challenge was working around the existing stone retaining wall. We carefully underpinned it with a new concrete foundation, installed a large rubber liner, and then built all of the internal stonework within the liner.

The result is a pool that feels completely at home in its surroundings, natural, understated, and shaped by the landscape.

We think the transformation speaks for itself.

Established in 2019. Still thriving today.

One of the questions we’re asked most often is: “How do natural pools perform over time?”

This natural pool, completed in 2019, continues to deliver crystal-clear water and excellent visibility right to the bottom – proof that when a natural pool is designed correctly, it can remain beautiful, healthy, and easy to maintain for years to come.

A few features we love about this project:
✔ A submerged timber step was incorporated to make the pool accessible for young children, with the flexibility to remove it as the family grows.
✔ The timber remains fully submerged, helping to preserve its longevity.
✔ The pool floor is maintained through our regular maintenance programme, with vacuuming only required approximately every three months.
✔ A generously sized skimmer captures leaves and debris, requiring a simple clean-out every 2–3 weeks.

Natural swimming pools aren’t just about replacing chlorine – they’re about creating a sustainable, long-term swimming environment that works with nature while remaining practical for everyday family life.

Tucked away on the western slopes of the Piketberg Mountains, Potkook Mountain Experience offers a tranquil escape surrounded by untouched fynbos and sweeping Atlantic views.

For this project, we worked with an engineer who set out to build his own natural pool for the guesthouse - a bold DIY venture crafted from raw concrete and shattered framework that gives the pool its striking, monolithic finish. We helped design a natural filtration and gravel wetland system that’s both simple to maintain and beautifully in tune with its surroundings.

The result is a pool that feels as if it’s always belonged here - grounded, serene, and perfectly at home in the rugged beauty of Potkook.

This pool was a complete DIY project built by the owner using our plans, guidance, and professional instruction. He constructed a gravel wetland between the existing pool and the wall in the background, following our detailed designs for the reticulation and drainage system - ensuring the water filters naturally through the gravel without clogging over time.

We also guided him through integrating low-energy pumps and maintaining the system for long-term water quality. Every so often, he sends photos of his pool, and it’s always a joy to see. Being part of projects like this - helping people create and enjoy these systems in places I may never visit - is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

No chlorine. No pool guy. No regrets.
Just pure, clear, chemical-free swimming - and all the frogs, dragonflies, and barefoot joy that comes with it.

This is your reminder that a natural pool isn’t just a trend - it’s a lifestyle shift.

First visit to The Table at Oak Valley this weekend and I’m smitten. A beautiful spot wrapped around what looks like the old manor house pool, dappled under giant oaks.

But the natural pool builder in me can’t unsee it: this place is begging for a natural pool conversion. Imagine lunch beside a living water feature—crystal-clear water, no harsh chemicals, a soft trickle over boulders.

If you’re going to dine around a pool, wouldn’t you want it to be a show-stopping aquatic landscape too? What do you think?
