Broiler chickens are raised in large, open or climate-controlled houses, where they roam, explore, eat, and commune with other chickens. A broiler is a chicken that is bred and raised specifically for meat production. Most commercial broilers reach slaughter weight between 33 and 34 days. Management of ventilation, housing, stocking density and in-house procedures must be evaluated regularly to support good welfare of the flock.

What is a fertile egg?
A fertile egg is the result of hens and roosters mating. They contain both male and female genetic material.

Fertile eggs are not the same as found in grocery stores, however there is a trend of eating these eggs among Paleo and raw followers who claim that the consumption of these eggs are more nutritious and healthy.

A fertile egg can be identified by a process called 'candling' (shining a bright light through the egg in a dark room) after a few days in the incubator.If the egg is fertile, a dark spot should be visible of the egg with some spider-like veins beginning to form around it.

If the egg is not fertile, you should just see the shape of the yellow yolk with no signs of veins.

Candling should be done at different stages of the incubation process usually around the 4th, 10th and 17th day in order to identify whether the fertile egg is developing or not.

At Eggcelerate we source quality fertile eggs direct from the farmers. To ensure that we always have a fresh supply of, eggs we dont hold stock of fertile eggs and a pre-order is required.

Point of lay hens for Sale

What is a point of lay?
A point of lay is generally referred to a hen which has reached it appropriate age to start laying eggs.

The actual age may vary dependent of breed but generally around the 20 weeks old.

Hens may lay small eggs at first, but these gradually grow in size. The number of eggs laid normally peaks within 6 months and steadily declines thereafter.

The older birds are sold off as Hard-body/Culls for consumption around the 1 year mark once production has drastically reduced or come to a halt.

While we primarily incubate broilers, we do offer a special production cycle for clients requiring point of lays. We supply point of lays to numerous egg farms all over South Africa.

We also stock a limited amount of hard-body/culls which are transferred from our egg farm.
