Private citizens who want to license a firearm for self-defence must complete Unit Standard 117705 (Knowledge of the Fi****ms Control Act) and a Basic handling unit standard for the specific firearm they want to license (e.g., handgun).

The course covers legal self-defence, firearm safety, loading and unloading, and basic shooting, with about 40 rounds fired during training.
It is a legal requirement for first-time firearm owners.

Security officers who are training for the first time and want to obtain a Business purpose competency must complete Unit Standard 117705 and Basic Unit Standard for a specific firearm (e.g.,handgun) before completing a Business purpose Unit Standard.
