Are you a Unique Brand, or Just Same-Old, Same-Old?

Have you seen the current TV advert? The one where a woman gets a doctor to install new shutters, a man get gold lessons from a plumber, all with disastrous results? It all makes perfect sense!

If you want something done properly you turn to a professional in the field, pay for their service and get exactly what you wanted. Most people don’t make their own clothes or shoes – do you? Probably not!

It may look easy to do a Are you a Unique Brand, or Just Same-Old, Same-Old?
Have you seen the current TV advert? The one where a woman gets a doctor to install new shutters, a man get gold lessons from a plumber, all with disastrous results? It all makes perfect sense!
If you want something done properly you turn to a professional in the field, pay for their service and get exactly what you wanted. Most people don’t make their own clothes or shoes – do you? Probably not!
It may look easy to do a DIY job of building your own cupboard or repairing your broken appliances, but many DIY efforts end in disaster, frustration and even tears! And then unfortunately most people still have to call in a professional, or worse still completely replace what they were trying to fix because it is now broken beyond repair – even by a professional, costing far more money than what you thought you could save.
So why is it that you do not believe that your CV must be prepared by a professional CV writer? Why do you think that you can do a quick DIY job by downloading a template from Google and preparing your own CV? Yes, all CV formats are similar – but it is the content that counts!
When big brands are in competition with each other, do they all run the same marketing theme trying to draw buyers attention by all offering and doing the same thing? Do they all use the same logo and corporate colours? Do they all approach you in the same way? Hell no! Not a chance – they are all vying with each other to come up with something more innovative than before. They are all trying to catch your eye with a better deal or offer.
So why do you think that if you download a CV template from Google (for free of course) and then type in what you think potential employers want to see (costing you only your own time), that your CV will stand out from all the other job applications potential employers read through. You’re no different – you’re just same-old, same-old like all the others who did the same thing you did. Your CV is going to end up just like theirs will – in the bin!
Show potential employers that you are worth considering! Show them your brand, you, your skills, your approach and what you have to offer. But you’re not in marketing you say sadly. No you’re not – that’s the value of having your CV compiled and prepared by a professional CV writer; an expert in the field of identifying and creating your unique brand and shaping your brand through your CV.
At Best Application Consultants we don’t just retype your CV, we get to know what you have to offer and then we create your unique brand in a CV. Why are you still gambling with your career? Make the decision to market yourself as the unique brand that you are! Call us now on 011 396 3700 or email us at [email protected] to discuss how we can get your job search on the right road.

Candidates Must Realise Employment is a Privilege & Not a Right!

Well, here’s the true story!

An employee, marketing himself as a Matriculant (busy studying part-time), posted his CV on one of the major job portals and was lucky enough to be offered a trainee position by a small company.

The company had down-sized drastically as a result of the current economic climate, but required someone to assist with day-to-day admin functions and were quite happy to train an inexperienced school leaver.

Quite early on the employer picked up that this employee did not like being shown what to do and how to do things, although he had never worked before. The employer was experienced at working with young people, so he was given the benefit of the doubt in most cases and training continued.

After about eight months of daily training with very little progress by the employee, the employer tried to boost the employee’s confidence by trying to appeal to the his ‘adult’ side, telling him daily that he must now regard himself as a ‘young professional’, dress the part and take responsibility.

Despite daily positive motivation, the employee resisted being shown how and what to do, had made very little progress at working on even the most basic of jobs independently, and had by this stage started lying blatantly and pointing fingers at others to cover up his poor work performance.

As mentioned before, this employer was struggling to keep afloat in a very harsh economic climate, and this employee was becoming very high maintenance with no solid results to show for the salary he earned.

When this was raised in an open staff meeting, the employee confidently stated “I admit that I am only 50% interested in my job!” Aghast at the blatant arrogance, the employer said to the employee that he should then only be earning 50% of his salary – to which the employee replied that that would be fair.

Still persevering on the premise that the employee’s behaviour was as a result of lack of working / life experience – the employer kept trying. On a second occasion the employee again stated “I am only 50% interested in my job!”

Shortly after losing another contract due to the economy, the employer advised the staff that there would be possible retrenchments if a more productive working environment could not be established, and all would meet the following day to discuss how this could be achieved.

The following morning the meeting was convened and the trainee immediately stated that he wanted to be retrenched – without any discussion. He was asked numerous times if that was what he wanted, and if he would rather not discuss other options. He was adamant, and the only thing he wanted was his retrenchment letter.

Needless to say, he immediately blazed a trail to the CCMA, claiming that he was retrenched unfairly without the correct processes being followed. The CCMA awarded in favour of the employer.

The ex-employee who had had no previous working experience then approached the Labour Court claiming that the CCMA commissioner had been biased. The case did not come before the Labour Court and the ex-employee walked away empty handed.

Throughout the process he believed himself to be right – to be the offended party. He had the gall to openly tell his employer on a number of occasions that he was “only 50% interested in my job”, still expecting his full salary. He rendered himself un-trainable by refusing to be shown how to follow processes and procedures and continuously displayed dishonest behaviour to shift blame. When discussion was opened to work out a way that would be more productive and profitable for the company, he would not partake and said that he wanted to be retrenched.

All of this from a Matriculant with no working experience, who was given an opportunity to be employed and trained in a market where youth unemployment stands at over 48%.

Lesson – pre-screen applicants very carefully before offering them a job. Always contact previous employers for an employment reference, and don’t take any CV at face-value! With Matriculants it is difficult to judge as there is no previous working experience – but we suggest a three month fixed term contract. If they do not behave like responsible adults and work to earn their pay, think very carefully before you renew their contract. Some people are just not worth the effort!

First impressions Count!

Ever heard the phrase ‘first impressions count’? Studies have proven this to be fact time and again. You have to make a good impression within the first few minutes of meeting someone if you want to create a good impression. This does not only apply to your person though, but to everything that you present to anyone. Always put your best foot forward!

So you’re agreeing with this and nodding your head! How is it then that you don’t apply this attitude to job-hunting? Why do you insist on sending a poorly prepared CV in response to job adverts and then wonder why you get a letter of regret or never hear anything further?

Hiring a professional CV writer like Best Application Consultant is an investment in your future! First impressions count, and a badly written CV is definitely going to make any impression on the reader; all it will get is binned and you will stand no chance of being considered for the vacancy.

At Best Application Consultant we have over two decades of experience in the recruitment industry. We know what recruiters and hiring managers look for. We know how to match a CV to a job specification. We know how to focus on your strong points to show the reader where you can add value.

It is a pity to see so many recruitment agencies encouraging job-seekers to download CV templates from the internet and not to pay a professional CV writer to prepare their CV. At Best Application Consultant we’re not speaking about just retyping your CV, we will prepare a full portfolio for you to use when applying for jobs.

If you download a template but don’t know how to properly word your CV, it’s no different to someone loading a pile of metal and parts in-front of you and telling you to build a car. Unless you’re a mechanical engineer or similar, your attempts will fail! So why is having a professional CV prepared any different? Think about it!

An Unsuccessful Job Application is not a Personal Rejection

Being unemployed can be very stressful whether you have previously been employed, or if you are a first time job seeker. Countless applicants for every job vacancy, reluctant employers – how are you going to get noticed? A small investment in having your job application portfolio prepared by professional CV writers is a step in the right direction and at Best Application Consultants we will ensure that your CV is an impressive and professional presentation of what you have to offer prospective employers.

People with previous working experience generally have financial responsibilities, whether they were employed in a junior, mid-level or senior position. Once we find permanent employment we feel confident in our abilities to retain our jobs and earn an ongoing reliable income. We believe that we can provide for ourselves and for others. We commit to monthly purchases like groceries, paying or contributing to rent, electricity – even schooling and clothing. We develop a sense of satisfaction in our role as contributors to our own well being and that of others.

Losing our jobs for any reason pulls the carpet of security and satisfaction from under our feet and often that fall is very hard and painful. Most people will begin looking for another job very quickly in order to ensure that they can maintain their responsibilities. Unfortunately in the current worldwide economic climate, which is made worse in South Africa by questionable politics, low investor confidence and financial downgrades, many job seekers are set to remain unemployed for some time. In desperation, most people prepare their own CV (often very poorly) and send it out en masse to recruiters and companies. Unfortunately it looks like what is – a poorly prepared CV sent out in desperation with little thought of the impression it will create. That impression sadly is mostly not a good one.

First time job seekers also feel the pain of unemployment as excitement at starting their first job slowly fades into dejection and desperation as they face job-application regrets one after the next. Most first time jobs seekers begin their job search not knowing what to expect or how to present themselves professionally by highlighting what they have to offer potential employers. Professional CV writers like Best Application Consultants do not only offer first time job seekers a professional portfolio, but also extensive advice and counselling on the job application process.

Both first time job seekers and people with previous working experience begin to become mentally and physically worn-down as their job search drags on and on, and is some cases debts mount and legal threats begin to rise. This is a very real scenario that can, and eventually does lead to a state of mental fatigue, depression and loss of confidence. What you must remember is that an unsuccessful job application is not a personal rejection! If you were regretted via email, it is your CV that was regretted, not you. If you were interviewed and then regretted, you were interviewed based on your working experience and how you presented your skills – not on the person that you are. Regret on CV only or after an interview just means that there was someone who fitted the job criteria better than your CV did. It is not a rejection of you personally.

At Best Application Consultants we have over 20 years of experience in the recruitment sector and know what makes a CV stand out for the right reasons. Invest in yourself and your career – mail us now on [email protected] or call us on 011 396 3700.
