The Application Checklist

You wrote a good CV. You wrote a good application message. Now stop and check before you press send.

Copy this list and tick each box:

☐ I read the advert again. Do I understand what they are looking for?

☐ My application message matches the job. If they want a nanny for a baby, I wrote about my experience with babies.

☐ I checked my spelling. Read your application slowly, or ask someone you trust to read it.

☐ I told my references. I sent them a message to let them know they may receive a call.

☐ I attached everything they asked for. CV, certificates, references, and any other documents requested in the advert.

☐ My CV and my reference say the same thing. The dates, job, and family name must match.

Why is the last one important?

If your CV says you worked for a family until December, but your reference says November, the family or agency may question whether the information you provided is correct.

Check every box. When everything is correct, you are ready to send your application.

Your Application Message

When you apply for a job, do not just send your CV or write “I am interested.”

A short, clear application message can help you introduce yourself properly and show that you read the job advert.

What should your application message include?

1. Greet the family

If you know the employer's name, use it. For example:
“Good morning, Mr and Mrs Mdlala.”

2. Say who you are and which job you want

“My name is Thandi Dlamini. I am applying for the live-out nanny position in Midrand.”

3. Share your relevant experience and skills

Only mention experience that is important for the job. If the family needs a nanny for young children, tell them about your experience with young children.

4. Include important qualifications

Mention qualifications that are relevant to the position, such as First Aid, CPR, or a valid driver's licence.

5. Say when you can start

Tell the family when you are available to begin working.

6. Confirm that your documents are attached

Let them know that you have attached your CV and references.

Example:

“Good morning, Mr and Mrs Mdlala.

My name is Thandi Dlamini. I am applying for the live-out nanny position in Midrand.

I have 5 years of experience caring for children aged 2 to 12. I cook healthy meals, help with homework, and do the bath and bedtime routine.

I have a First Aid and CPR certificate and a valid driver's licence.

I am available to start on 1 November.

My CV and references are attached.

Thank you for your time.

Thandi Dlamini”

Keep your message short, professional, and relevant to the job you are applying for.

Your References

A good reference letter can help a family trust your experience. Here is how to get one.

A good reference letter must have:

The dates you worked there
Your job
The family name
What your duties were
Your good qualities
Their phone number and email
When must I ask for it?

The best time to ask for a reference letter is when you leave the job.

Did you leave without one? It is not too late. Contact your previous employer and politely ask them for a reference letter.

Most important: Tell your reference when you are looking for work.

Families and agencies may phone your previous employer to confirm your experience. If they are not expecting the call, it can make the reference process more difficult.

Send them a simple message such as:

“Please expect a call from a family or agency regarding my work reference.”

Your Work Experience

Many CVs say, “Nanny for 5 years.” That does not tell the family enough. Do this instead:

For every domestic work job, write 5 things:

Your job (nanny, caregiver, or housekeeper)
Live-in or live-out
The family name and the area
The month and year you started and stopped
What you did every day
The first line must show the size of the job:

Nanny: The ages of the children when you started
Caregiver: Whether you cared for an older person or a child with special needs
Housekeeper: The size of the home, for example, the number of rooms

Example:

“Nanny, live-in. Mdlala family, Midrand. Jan 2020 to Dec 2024.

Looked after 2 children, aged 2 and 5. I cooked, took them to school, helped with homework, and did the bedtime routine.”

What about other work experience?

If you already have domestic work experience, you can keep unrelated jobs short. For a job such as cashier, write the job and the year without listing all the duties. This keeps your CV focused and saves space.

If you do not have domestic work experience yet, you can include the duties from your previous jobs to show the skills and experience you already have.

The top of your CV is the first thing the family reads. Make it count.

1. Your details

Write your name, your area (for example, Pretoria), your phone number, and your email.

Do not write your full address, ID number, marital status, or number of children. You do not need them, and it is safer.

2. Your summary (3 or 4 lines)

Tell the reader four things:

Who you are
How many years of experience you have
What job you want
If you can live in, live out, or both

3. Your skills

Only write skills for the job you want. For a nanny: potty training, babies, CPR, homework help. For a housekeeper: laundry, cleaning, ironing.

Tip: Do not write "I am guaranteed to be a good worker." Anyone can say that. Rather, show it with your years of work and your references.
