On World Environment Day, global attention turns to the environmental challenges that continue to affect communities around the world.
Closer to home, many former asbestos mining areas still carry a legacy that has not disappeared with time. Contaminated land, historical mine waste, and environmental exposure can continue to impact communities long after mining operations have ceased.
As the conversation around encourages action for a healthier future, it is also an opportunity to recognise the importance of addressing environmental risks from the past.

At Enviro Investigations, we assist individuals and families in understanding historical asbestos exposure and assessing whether they may have grounds for a claim.

Asbestos exposure did not only affect those working underground or on the mines. Entire communities were exposed, including women who lived and worked in mining towns across South Africa.
Teachers, nurses, shop workers, mothers, and daughters were often exposed through the environments around them, asbestos dust carried through communities, contaminated land, nearby processing areas, and daily contact with fibres brought home on clothing and equipment.
For many women, symptoms only appeared decades later, long after the exposure itself had been forgotten.

This International Day of Action for Women’s Health, we acknowledge the women whose exposure histories have too often been overlooked, and the importance of recognising that asbestos-related disease affected far more than the mining workforce alone.

At Enviro Investigations, we assist individuals and families in uncovering past asbestos exposure and understanding whether they may have grounds for a claim.
Because understanding the past can be an important step toward finding answers today.

This Workers Day, we recognise the men and women who built their lives through hard work, often in environments where the risks were not fully understood.
For many former mineworkers and those living near mining areas, asbestos exposure was part of that reality. And for some, the effects are still being felt years later.
If you worked in environments where asbestos was present, and are now facing lung-related illness, you may have the right to seek answers and support.

Enviro Investigations works to help uncover exposure histories and guide individuals through the process of understanding and pursuing a claim.
Because your work should never come at the cost of your health.

As Global Asbestos Awareness Week comes to a close, the message remains clear.

The legacy of asbestos continues to affect communities across the Northern Cape and beyond.
Through awareness, education, and support, we can ensure that families affected by asbestos-related disease are heard and supported.

Together we continue raising awareness, not just this week, but every day.

Anna Margaret van Syfer never worked in an asbestos mine, yet asbestos claimed her life.
Growing up in the Northern Cape, she lived and worked near mining areas where asbestos dust filled the air, settled in homes, and became part of everyday life. From her workplace next to an asbestos storage site, to her home near Koegas, exposure was constant, even through family members who unknowingly carried dust home.
Decades later, at the age of 77, Anna was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer caused by asbestos exposure.
Her story is a reminder that asbestos did not only affect mine workers. Entire communities were exposed.
And many are still living with the consequences today.
If you or someone in your family has been affected, you are not alone in this. The Glynnis Gale Foundation is here to offer support and guidance, and Enviro Investigations can help you better understand your exposure and possible next steps.

If you or a loved one experience symptoms such as a persistent cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional.

For people who lived near asbestos mines or worked in environments where asbestos was present, recognising these signs can be an important step towards getting the right care.
Awareness can make a difference.
