During the recent floods in and around the Garden Route, Little Karoo and surrounding area's, our volunteers in conjuntion with Gift Of The Givers were invollved in numerous missions. We provided assistance in the rescue of the school children stranded at the Cango resort, the provision of food packages to cut off communitys through flooded rivers, assisted with the airlift and supply of food packages, together with the SAPS, Working on Fire, Red Cross AMS and the Garden Route District Muncipality.

We were also asked to consult on planning and implimentation of rescue plans for the Kannaland muncipality and advised on risks and road closures which contributed to saving lives.

The Greater Knysna community of the Western Cape, South Africa has seen more than its fair share of natural disasters, from the devastating fires to regular flooding. It would be expected that disaster management would be a top priority, but that is sadly not the case. Whole communities have to survive without an Ambulance or fire truck, no trained first responders or medical intervention available. Any response from our local or provincial authorities will generally take 45 minutes to an hour.

It is the intention of the Knysna Community Emergency Support organisation to not only provide a timely response, but also provide training and basic supplies to the local communities to be able intervein until support arrives.

Wed currently have a doctor, 2 rescue divers, 12 trained basic fire fighters and 6 level 3 first aiders. We plan to get this group up to 20 by year end and have the services of 2 facilitators to provide training to the community.

We request any assistance in helping us to purchase more equipment and finance the training of additional members.
