COMMUNITY SNARES & CLEAN-UP OPERATION IN THE SALT RIVER AREA

On Saturday, 22 August, a group of dedicated volunteers—including community members, Neighbourhood Watch members, CPF members and Allsound Security—came together to search for snares placed by poachers in the Salt River area.
The group was guided and briefed by officials from CapeNature and the Cape Leopard Trust on what to look out for, as well as general safety precautions while conducting the search.

The volunteers also brought black bags to assist with clearing old camping sites that had been identified during a previous recce by CapeNature. An entire bakkie load of rubbish was collected and removed by Allsound Security.

During the search, two possible snares, as well as a significant amount of barbed wire, were also discovered and removed.

The initiative was coordinated through a WhatsApp group that was created following an incident in which a suspected poacher was spotted carrying a poached bushbuck ram across Salt River Road. Future conservation and search efforts will also be coordinated through this group.
