Wow, 111 years ago this patent was issued to William Besserdich. In 1914 If William Besserdich hadn't become so frustrated with the way Walter Olen was running FWD, he might never have left the company he helped found. That decision ultimately led him to seek another patent and eventually he found a new partner in B.A. Mosling. Williams engineering talent helped create the Wisconsin Duplex Auto Company (Oshkosh Motor Truck Manufacturing Company) in 1917. Sometimes history turns on a single decision—and without that split, Oshkosh Truck never would have been born.

It is remarkable to consider that a personal and management conflict at FWD ultimately gave birth to one of the most influential names in heavy truck history: Oshkosh grew into a global leader in specialty and defense vehicles.
