Fierce
We came across Porcupine Female on an impala kill and she was not happy with the hyena at the base of the tree, hissing and snarling at it.
For this brief moment she made eye contact while doing so...

One of the greatest highlights of the trip was finding this absolutely stunner of a Gaboon Adder (Bitis gabonica) in St Lucia.

We were pretty bleak when our whole day of birding rained out in St Lucia and we pretty much had to give up as equipment got soaked and no bird in its right mind was being active or cooperative.

Driving around aimlessly, a large moving log caught my eye in the darkness of the forest floor just on the edge of the road.

No more than an hour ago we spoke about this amazing snake and how impossible it was to find.

I jumped out without hesitation getting absolutely soaked in the 30 or so seconds that I was out of the car and ended up with this photo.

I still think back and get chills at the thought of how special and truly spectacular this encounter was.

Fewer than 5mins after we found it he had disappeared into the leaf litter into which he blends so perfectly

Wish there was a way to convey the proportions of this adventure to the top of Ntsikeni Mountain. The climb got the better of me I won't lie but would do it again in a heartbeat.

Bearded Vulture, Drakensberg Rockjumper, Ground Woodpecker, Sentinel Rock Thrush and Yellow-Breasted Pipit was to be found at the top.

Managed great views of Red-Chested Flufftail in the floodplain before the climb (as far as great views of flufftails go) and unexpectedly flushed a female Striped Flufftail on the way up.

An incredibly memorable day as was every day of this magnificent 21 day birding trip.

So entertaining to sit and watch a relaxed group of dwarf mongoose.

They live inside termite mounds and often stay close by in case a predator comes by and q quick escape is necessary.

This pup was up for exploring and loved watching him act on his curiosity.

Porcupine Female is one of the many leopards on the concession and can sometimes be quite skittish and unwilling to cooperate. This was not the case.
What an awesome Christmas Present to have.

It was on the same misty morning that I took the "Hyena in the Mist" picture that I happened upon this flock of ostriches in the mist close to Mopani camp in Kruger National Park.
Leaving from camp early pays off and I'm excited to have this one printed.

A young male leopard was found resting in an incredibly thick and dense Gardenia, with very little of him being seen through the lattice of branches. When we showed up, a thunderstorm started rolling in and the leopard became increasingly uncomfortable in the swaying branches. After patiently waiting near the tree, we were graced with seeing him weave himself free and out of the bush where he then stopped for a moment on a fallen marula - just long enough for a stunning portrait session. After the brief pause he kept moving on and we predicted that he was going to cross a large open plain. This was an exciting prospect with the dramatic skies and light. Further than this the pictures speak for themselves.

A pack of wild dogs with no fewer than 16 pups greeted us just outside the lodge when we left for morning game drive. We followed them as they frantically ran up and down the river and finally went down for a drink. The pups were particularly playful and put up an amazing show for us with a bird's eye view from the top of the river bank.

Saddle-Billed Storks are one of SA's most impressive birds with their massive size and brilliant colours (not shown to full extent yet by these two immature individuals)

The iris colour is a clear distinction between male and female (male having the dark iris and female a light yellow iris.

Usually these magnificent birds are to be found near or even in water and I had to take the opportunity to snap this image when I found them in the middle of a massive grass plain in the Northern parts of Kruger National Park.

Recently it was estimated that there are as few as 80 breeding pairs in South Africa of which around 90% are located in the Greater Kruger.

The motherly instinct is usually to hide their newborns and get away from any potential danger as soon as can.

For this reason we don't often get to see more than a glimpse of a baby vervet for longer than a few seconds.

I suspect that the rain and cold was part of the reason that this new mother did not want to move which gave a unique opportunity to capture this intimate moment.

This has to be one of my favourite birds. Had to go to town and came across these Southern Ground Hornbills walking alongside the road.

It is a total privilege having to drive through Kruger National Park to get to town.

I have never seen them this relaxed with vehicles.
