Trophex Taxidermy Professional taxidermy services in South Africa for both the International and Domestic hunter. Trophex is managed and owned by Bertus and Yolanda Steenkamp.

Having been involved in the hunting industry for many years, this family became aware of the lack of good service in the trophy handling sector (taxidermy and dipping for exportation). Trophex originally started with processing raw hunting trophies for export. In the second year of their existence Trophex exported over a 1000 trophies. Trophex started taxidermy and is currently competing with the top Taxidermies in South Africa while being an international competition of note.

The big game of every South African student: springhares.

You go out at night with a spotlight and a bakkie, chase one until it tires, jump off and catch it by the tail. Then you check its ear to see whether somebody caught it before you did.

Did you do this growing up? Tell us in the comments.

A whole herd of elephants charged him.

Ruben's dad does not like telling this story, because he thinks people will say he made it up. He shot the cow that came straight for him, she fell right in front of him, and he moved in behind her while the rest of the herd went past on both sides.

Bertus is still trying to get him onto the podcast to tell it himself.

A mussel that goes fishing.

Chad is a biologist who studies freshwater mussels back home in the United States. They grow a lure that looks like a small fish or a worm. When a fish bites it, the mussel fires its young into the fish's mouth. They live on the gills for four weeks, then drop off. And every species of mussel needs its own kind of fish.

Bertus, being an entrepreneur, immediately wanted to copy the lure.

Both barrels of a .470 double. By accident.

Ruben of Shingani Safaris had borrowed his brother's double r***e for a buffalo hunt. They found the wounded bull in very thick bush, moved for a better angle, and it stood up a few paces away. He went for the front trigger and got both. The r***e went flying, and the client kept shooting.

14 million hunters in the United States. Only about 9,000 of them come to South Africa.

Bertus asks about it on every podcast, because this is the ultimate hunting destination. Robert Sizenbach's answer is the size of the properties and the number of species: you can drive all day and never reach a gate.

Have you hunted in South Africa yet? If not, what is holding you back? Tell us in the comments.

The anthill prank, part two.

Ruben and his friend kept their carved anthill standing, repaired it after every rain, and told every hunter who drove past the same straight-faced story about a very rare kind of ant. Everyone believed it, until the hunters went back and told his dad what they had seen.

"I don't know how to drink brandy without Coke."

Every podcast starts somewhere, and Podcast #19 started with a proper South African welcome. Robert Sizenbach grew up on wh***ey and Coke in West Texas, so brandy and Coke felt like home.

What is your drink around the fire? Tell us in the comments.

Have you heard of the rare African anthill ant?

When Ruben of Shingani Safaris was younger, he and a friend took an axe and a small shovel to the tallest anthill on the farm one late night. What they carved, and the story they told every hunter who drove past it, is part one of this prank.

Part two tomorrow.
