WORLD TOURISM DAY
27 SEPTEMBER 2020

It was at its third session (Torremolinos, Spain, September 1979), that the UNWTO General Assembly decided to institute World Tourism Day, commencing in the year 1980.

Tourism Month is celebrated annually in September, and provides a heightened month-long focus on the importance of the sector to the South African economy.
Tourism Month features themed activities that are aligned to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) World Tourism Day Celebrations that take place annually on 27 September.
The 2020 theme is 'Tourism and Rural Development'. Upon researching the definition of Rural Tourism a number of definitions emerged but there was a common thread that defined rural tourism as the movement of people from their normal places of residence to a rural area for a minimum period of 24 hours and upward, for the sole purposes of leisure and pleasure.
The 2019 UNWTO theme for World Tourism Day is Tourism and jobs – a better future for all, which highlights the tourism sector’s vast capability to create jobs and therefore reduce the country’s unemployment rate.

Realization has most probably set in that physical distancing and social distancing are two very different concepts. The Internet can take care of the latter (or at least make it bearable). It can also help you get your business back on track, start a new project, play an important part in home schooling, and make better security measures possible. Planning, design, usage, hardware requirements, how many users and various other factors beyond sending e-mail and social media messages come into play. The Internet: Not only the most dangerous weapon ever put into the hands of mankind, but also a very powerful tool providing you with everything you need for both work and play. Whether working from home is new to you, or realization set in regarding reviving or keeping your business alive, the fact of the matter remains that the best possible Internet connection at your location is the starting point. Even in rural areas, acceptable levels of productivity and efficiency are achievable. Working remotely or running a business, bandwidth-intensive applications including video conferencing, VoIP and cloud systems demand proper planning and the correct equipment. Ramblings of a rolling stone…

Been a while…in a country where cheap beer goes for around R96.00 (not to mention a punnet of grapes at around R700.00) here and there data also comes at a premium. From being considered a dangerous weapon not safe for air travel in one country and arriving in The Land of the Rising Sun, leaving a trail to follow to Magalies becomes quite interesting.

Japan: unless you’re a rolling stone, don’t go there with new shoes and not being walking fit – those nifty cellphone apps easily clock up around 18000 steps on a full day out. Either that or expect to pay from R2000.00 up for the privilege of a man in a suit opening the taxi’s door for you. Be sure to take a backpack as there are no dustbins on the clean streets of Japan. On time means 09H47, not 10H30-ish. Expect to get an apology because it took a whole ten seconds to make a copy of your passport. Hospitality, service, quality of the highest standards wherever you go. Want some quiet time? Go on a train trip – respecting each other is part of the Japanese way. Would love to see them Following that Numberplate – just wonder what their social stories will tell…

Lessons learnt: Don’t include countries with extreme weather differences in the same trip. From extreme heat to extreme cold makes packing difficult and people easily catch flu, etc between aircons and fans on one side, and heaters and fireplaces on the other side. Always choose your travel companions well – thanks guys, you made this trip a memorable one! More adventure awaits and more memories will be made. Follow that Numberplate!

Ramblings of a rolling stone…

Kanchanaburi, Thailand.

Getting a taste of life in days gone past before visiting Hellfire Pass and the Bridge over River Kwai. What really happened there is of course a long way removed from the Hollywood movie. Besides the Death Railway, the World War II Cemetery, JEATH Museum and Saiyoke Waterfall are all worthwhile visits whilst in the Kanchanaburi area.

Ramblings of a rolling stone...

Christmas in Bethlehem...The Church of Nativity, The Via Dolorosa and the Western Wall.

Located on the spot believed to be the Birthplace of Jesus Christ for some 2000 years, the Church of the Nativity is one of the most sacred Christian sites in the world since at least the 4th century AD up to the present. The sanctity of the site is maintained by the three churches occupying it. The construction of the church in 339 AD above the grotto, and its reconstruction in 533 AD, commemorates the birth of Jesus and attests to seventeen hundred years-long tradition of belief that this grotto was indeed the birthplace of Jesus Christ.

Points to ponder: Switzerland maintains its No. 1 overall position in the rankings for the third consecutive year in the 2019 Best Countries rankings, the annual report based on a worldwide survey of more than 20,000 people. Japan now ranks No. 2 overall, a move up of three positions from 2018. Japan attracted 31.19 million international tourists in 2018. The 2017 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report ranked Japan 4th out of 141 countries overall, which was the highest in Asia. Japan gained relatively high scores in almost all of the featured aspects, such as health and hygiene, safety and security, and cultural resources and business travel. Japan has 21 World Heritage Sites
We’ve got scope for amelioration! Magalies is big enough to matter, small enough to change.

Ramblings of a rolling stone…

Bangkok, Thailand.

The Land of Smiles is truly one of the most remarkable and welcoming countries in the entire world. As the crow flies Magalies is about 9095km from Bangkok. Thailand attracts more than 35 million tourists per year. The Thai population reflects a strong sense of shared traditions and cultural identity. Throughout the country, the most important values that Thai people hold to are respect, self-control, and a non-confrontational attitude. Losing face by showing anger or by telling a lie is a source of great shame for Thai people. Another very important concept in Thai culture is sanuk. The sense of humor and joie de vivre captured in sanuk is central to the Thai way of life.
As with all other places where tourism thrives, preservation of culture, history and infrastructure are some of the main ingredients.
Follow that Numberplate. Bring those Thai smiles. You're welcome!
