When you hire a security company, you should ask is if they are PSIRA registered.

PSIRA stands for the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority. In South Africa, it is a legal requirement for all security companies and their officers to be PSIRA registered. It is not optional.

What PSIRA registration means in practice:
→ The company has been vetted and meets minimum legal standards
→ Officers have completed accredited training
→ Directors and managers hold security grading (minimum Grade B)
→ The company is compliant with tax, employment and industry regulations
→ There is a formal body you can report to if standards are not met

A company operating without PSIRA registration is doing so illegally — and if something goes wrong on your site, your insurance coverage could be affected.

Before you sign a security services contract, these are the questions worth asking:

1. Is every guard and the company itself PSIRA registered? (Ask for proof, not just assurance.)

2. What does supervision look like during a shift? A guard without regular supervision is a guard who isn't being held accountable.

3. What is the documented incident response protocol? Not a vague answer — a written process.

4. How often does management visit your site after the contract starts? If the answer is "when there's a problem," that's too late.

5. What reporting do you receive? Shift logs, incident reports, and patrol records should be standard, not optional.

Security is a service most businesses don't think about until something goes wrong. The contract you sign before something goes wrong determines whether your provider is ready when it does.

SAFETY TIP - GATE SECURITY

Your gate remote could be a security risk you haven't thought about.
Older gate remotes use fixed codes that can be copied with a cheap device available online. Modern remotes use rolling codes that change with every use — making them much harder to clone.

If your gate remote is more than a few years old, it may be worth asking your installer whether it uses rolling code technology.

Other gate security habits worth checking:
- Never leave the gate open while you're home entertaining — follow-home incidents happen during exactly these moments
- Don't give gate codes or remotes to people casually and forget to change them when staff leave
- Check that your gate can't be derailed from the outside — a common entry method

Criminals don't like being seen. A well-lit perimeter gives them fewer places to hide and makes your property a less attractive target.

A few practical tips:

→ Motion-sensor lights around entry points and dark corners

→ Keep perimeter lighting on throughout the night, not just when triggered — motion sensors can miss slow-moving intruders

→ Light up areas behind walls or outbuildings where someone could hide undetected

→ Replace blown bulbs immediately — one dark spot is all it takes
