WEEK 3: THE MBEKWENI RECYCLING PROJECT IS KEEPING THE MOMENTUM GOING!

What started as a small step towards a cleaner community is becoming a commitment to environmental responsibility, recycling awareness, and a better future for Mbekweni.

Every bottle, can, piece of paper and cardboard collected is a step towards reducing waste and keeping our environment clean. We believe that change starts with us, and together, we can make a difference!

A TREE IS NOT ENOUGH — WE NEED TO PROTECT OUR PUBLIC SPACES.

During Arbor Month, Drakenstein Municipality planted three trees at one of Mbekweni’s longstanding illegal dumping hotspots, near the Thusong Centre and Mbekweni Clinic open area.

We appreciate the municipality’s effort to introduce greenery into an area that has been severely affected by illegal dumping.

However, the reality on the ground remains concerning: illegal dumping continues, vandalism continues, and the area remains vulnerable.

Recently, a municipal service provider was observed working on a sub-electrical structure in the area.

Following the work, the structure was apparently not properly secured.

Individuals who frequently enter the area then attempted to access the structure, seemingly looking for cables or other materials of value.

After finding nothing, the structure was reportedly subjected to further attempted damage.

This creates a potential public safety, infrastructure and environmental risk.

As Keep Mbekweni Clean NPO, we don't want to simply drive past the problem or pretend it isn't there. We believe that community organisations have a responsibility to raise concerns when we see something that could eventually become a bigger problem.

Our request to Drakenstein Municipality :

•We respectfully request that the municipality inspect and assess this structure and consider removing it if it is no longer required,

•or alternatively ensure that it is properly secured and protected from vandalism.

If left unattended, infrastructure such as this can become a target for vandalism and scrap-metal theft — potentially creating an even bigger problem for the community.

Cleaning Mbekweni is not only about picking up litter.

It is also about identifying risks, protecting public infrastructure, creating safer public spaces and working with the municipality to find practical solutions.

We appreciate the trees.

Now let's protect the space around them. 🌳

As we celebrate Women’s Day, Keep Mbekweni Clean NPO would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Nicollette Booysen for taking the time to visit Mbekweni and engage with our community.

Your visit came at an important moment, following conversations around inclusive tourism development and community participation in shaping local destinations.

We are grateful that you chose to experience Mbekweni beyond the headlines — by meeting community leaders, learning about environmental initiatives, exploring local food and lifestyle spaces, and witnessing the passion of residents who are working to build a greener and more welcoming township.

Your visit followed the DEDAT Co-Developer Workshop and Ambassador Programme, which focused on inclusive socio-economic development through tourism. We appreciate that you came to see how these ideas can take shape in Mbekweni through community leadership, environmental action, entrepreneurship, food, culture, and local storytelling.

The visit highlighted the role of local organisations, entrepreneurs, and community initiatives in creating a destination that is both authentic and sustainable. It also affirmed the value of partnerships that recognise the people of Mbekweni as custodians and storytellers of their own community.

These reflections are drawn from the unpublished visit notes and tourism narrative shared with us during your engagement with Mbekweni. We honour your willingness to listen, learn, and walk alongside the community as these ideas continue to develop. Your presence reminded us that meaningful tourism begins with relationships, respect, and genuine community engagement.

Thank you for seeing the potential in Mbekweni and for helping amplify a story that is rooted in dignity, sustainability, and hope for the future. We celebrate you not only as a visitor, but as a woman who took the time to connect with the people, places, and possibilities that make Mbekweni special.

Last week, Keep Mbekweni Clean NPO visited CL Trading Buy-Back Centre in Parow Industrail to learn from one of the Western Cape's recycling leaders and explore a partnership for Mbekweni.

We are proud to announce that CL Trading has committed to supporting Keep Mbekweni Clean by providing technical guidance and training for our working team as we prepare to mobalise support for our community Recycling Swap Shop.

Our implementation partner is ready!
Now we need an operational site.

We therefore respectfully call on Drakenstein Municipality to assist with endorsing our proposed operating site where this community project can be established. We are thankful for the ongoing partnership with Cape Winelands DM Municipal Health Services in including us in their campaigns.

We also plead with Councillor Vuyo Bolani to support this project as it represents his ward. Our proposal has been through consultation and planning, and we believe the time has come to move towards implementation.

This project is bigger than any individual or organisation. It is about creating opportunities for waste pickers, reducing illegal dumping, improving public health, and helping families earn an income through recycling.

Let's put the people of Mbekweni first!

Together, government, business and the community can build a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Mbekweni!
