If you've ever tried to get fibre in South Africa, you've bumped into these two letters-soups. Here's the simplest way to think about it:
🚧 The FNO builds the road. 📦 The ISP is the delivery service that drives on it.
FNO = Fibre Network Operator These are the people who physically build the fibre network:
They dig the trenches and lay the fibre cable in your street
They run the line from the street into your house and mount the little white box on your wall
They own and maintain that physical line
They decide which suburbs get fibre, and when
You'll know them by name: Openserve, Vumatel, Frogfoot, Octotel, MetroFibre, Zoom Fibre, Evotel and others. Most of them don't sell internet to you directly — they run "open access" networks, which means any ISP can use their line.
ISP = Internet Service Provider That's us. We use the FNO's line to actually get you online:
We buy capacity on the fibre network
We connect you to the real internet — local and international
We sell you the package, supply the router, and handle your account and billing
We're the ones you phone when something's not working
We log and chase faults with the FNO on your behalf
Why this matters to you 👇
1️⃣ Coverage isn't the ISP's call. If the FNO hasn't built fibre in your street yet, no ISP can connect you there. Yet.
2️⃣ You can change ISP without a new installation. The line in your wall stays exactly where it is. You're not locked in — if you're unhappy, you move to a new ISP and keep the same fibre.
3️⃣ Same line, very different experience. Two people on the identical 50/50 line can have very different internet, because price, support, uptime and how the ISP manages their network is where the real difference sits.
4️⃣ Something broken? Phone your ISP first. We diagnose it, and if it's a line fault we escalate it to the FNO. Most FNOs won't deal with you directly.
5️⃣ Ordering and installation. You sign up with the ISP, and the FNO's technician comes out to do the install.
So: the FNO gives you the pipe. The ISP puts the internet through it. 🙌
