FULLY BOOKED… BUT STILL COULDN’T MAKE PAYROLL.

This is the kind of business problem that looks confusing from the outside.
The client was busy.
The diary was full.
Staff were working.
Customers were paying.
But when payday came, there still wasn’t enough cash.

So the real question became:
“If the business is this busy, where is the money going?”

The diagnosis usually comes down to a few things:
- Jobs were being priced too low
- Labour hours were higher than what was quoted
- Transport and materials were eating into margins
- Some customers were paying too slowly
- Busy work was being mistaken for profitable work
- Cash coming in was immediately being used to cover old obligations

The problem was not a lack of customers.

The problem was that the business had activity without enough margin and cash discipline.

That is why more sales are not always the answer.

Sometimes the business first needs to understand:
- Which jobs actually make money?
- Which customers are worth keeping?
- Are prices covering the real cost of delivery?
- How much cash is left after the work is done?

At Inzuzo Analytics, we help business owners get behind the numbers and understand why a busy business can still struggle financially.

WHY FUNDING REQUESTS GET DECLINED — AND WHAT BUSINESS OWNERS SHOULD WATCH OUT FOR

Getting declined for funding does not always mean your business is bad.
Often, it means the funder was not yet convinced.

Here are some common reasons funding requests struggle:
- Not enough information to show the business is viable
- Cash-flow projections that are weak or unsupported
- Questions about whether there is real market demand
- Concerns about the founder’s experience, credibility or ability to execute
- Too little own contribution, security or financial cushion
- The industry is seen as high risk
- The application does not meet the funder’s qualifying criteria
- Previous defaults or repayment issues
- Too much personal debt or financial pressure on the owner

The good news?
Most of these are not random problems.
They are things you can prepare for and improve.

Before applying for funding, ask yourself:

Can I clearly explain how the business makes money?
Do my numbers support the story?
Can I show demand?
Can I prove the business can manage and repay the funding?

A strong funding application is not just about needing money.
It is about showing that the business is viable, prepared and ready to use capital well.

At Inzuzo Analytics, we help business owners strengthen their funding case before they apply — so they can approach lenders with more clarity and confidence.

A declined application does not always mean the business is not fundable.

Often, it means the business is not ready yet.

Here’s what to work on:

1. Build stronger turnover
If monthly sales are too low, focus first on growing consistent revenue before taking on new debt.

2. Build trading history
Give the business time to prove that it can operate consistently over several months.

3. Use proper bank statements
Submit the bank’s official PDF statements so income can be verified easily.

4. Fix company compliance
Make sure CIPC registration and other business records are valid and up to date.

5. Check affordability before applying
Work out how much cash is left after existing loans, debit orders and operating costs.

6. Improve account behaviour
Reduce returned debit orders, avoid unnecessary overdrafts and stabilise cash flow where possible.

7. Create a buffer for irregular income
If revenue is seasonal, build reserves and show how repayments will still be covered in slower months.

8. Avoid applying everywhere at once
Understand funder rules, waiting periods and whether you already have an active facility.

9. Check the owner’s credit profile
For younger businesses, lenders often look closely at the directors too.

The goal is not to keep sending applications.

The goal is to remove the reasons a funder could say no.

At Inzuzo Analytics, we help SMMEs review their funding readiness, identify the gaps and build a stronger case before reapplying.

WHY SMME FUNDING APPLICATIONS GET DECLINED — AND WHAT TO AVOID

Many business owners think funding is declined because the funder “doesn’t understand the business.”

Sometimes the real issue is much simpler:
the application makes the business look too risky.

Here are some common reasons SMME funding applications struggle:

- Unclear funding request — “I need R2 million” is not enough. A funder wants to know exactly what the money will buy.
- Weak cash flow — the business may be profitable, but there is not enough cash left each month to comfortably repay new debt.
- Poor or outdated financial records — if the numbers are incomplete, inconsistent or difficult to explain, confidence drops.
- Too much existing debt — the business may already be stretched before adding another repayment.
- No proof of demand — projections are much stronger when backed by contracts, purchase orders, repeat customers or a real sales pipeline.
- Too much reliance on one customer — losing one major client could put the whole business under pressure.
- Compliance gaps — expired or missing tax, company or industry documents can delay or weaken an application.
- Unrealistic forecasts — huge growth assumptions without evidence can make the application less credible.
- Applying for the wrong type of funding — a long-term loan may not be the right solution for a short-term purchase order or debtor gap.
What should you avoid?

Avoid approaching another funder with the same pack and hoping for a different answer.

Before applying, ask:

How much do we really need?
What will the funding do for the business?
Can we comfortably repay it?
What evidence supports our story?
What could make a funder nervous?

Funding readiness is not about having a business plan. It is about showing that the business is financially credible, commercially sound and ready to use capital responsibly.

At Inzuzo Analytics, we help SMMEs identify the gaps before the application goes in — and build a stronger funding case.

WHICH CUSTOMER ACTUALLY MAKES YOU THE MOST MONEY?

It’s not always the one with the biggest invoice.
A customer may bring in a lot of revenue, but also come with:
- More labour
- More travel
- More materials
- More discounts
- More admin
- More rework
- Slower payments

So while they look valuable on paper, they may be leaving very little profit behind.
Here’s a simple example:

Customer A pays you R30,000 a month
but needs constant attention, extra trips and pays late.

Customer B pays you R18,000 a month
is easier to serve, pays on time and uses fewer resources.

Which one is better for your business?

The answer is not always Customer A.

The better question is:

“After all the costs of serving this customer, how much profit is actually left?”
That is customer profitability.

And once you know it, you can make better decisions about:
- which customers to grow;
- which ones to reprice;
- which ones need different terms;
- and which ones may no longer be worth serving.

More customers are not always the answer. Better customers are.

At Inzuzo Analytics, we help businesses understand which customers are really making money — and which are quietly draining profit.

A busy workshop, strong vehicle sales or a full order book can look like success. But do the numbers tell the same story?

A healthy automotive business keeps an eye on:

• Profit margins: What’s left after parts, labour and overheads?
• Cash flow: Can you pay wages and suppliers on time?
• Stock: Is it selling—or tying up cash?
• Customers: Are they returning and recommending you?

At Inzuzo Analytics, we help you understand what’s working, where profit is slipping and what needs attention.

Stop guessing. Know your numbers.
