On this day, 50 years ago, the youth of South Africa stood up with courage and conviction, helping shape the future of our nation.

As we commemorate Youth Day, we honour the young people of 16 June 1976 and the sacrifices they made in pursuit of opportunity, dignity and a better future.

Fifty years on, their legacy lives on in every young person who chooses to learn, lead, create and take ownership of what comes next. Through our work at Giving Wings, we remain committed to creating opportunities for young people to grow, lead and thrive.

To the youth of yesterday, thank you for paving the way. To the youth of today, the future is yours to shape.

THURSDAY REFLECTION…..

Most weeks, you probably end by asking yourself what you got done. But a more useful question is what you learned about how you work.

Productivity on its own doesn’t create progress if the same patterns keep repeating week after week. If nothing changes in how you show up, your outcomes usually won’t either.

Ownership is not just about taking responsibility for results. It’s about noticing the decisions you made, the habits you leaned on and the trade-offs you accepted to get there. That’s where real awareness starts.

So instead of only reviewing what you achieved this week, ask yourself: what influenced those results? and what do you need to change so next week looks different?

South Africa's youth are ready to work. The challenge is getting a foot in the door.

According to Statistics South Africa's Quarterly Labour Force Survey (Q1 2025), youth unemployment among people aged 15–34 rose to 46.1%, leaving more than 4.8 million young South Africans without work.

Behind these numbers are graduates and job seekers looking for opportunities to gain experience, build networks and start their careers.

Many young people need more than jobs; they need access, exposure and practical skills to bridge the gap between education and employment.

Giving Wings partners with organisations to help graduates build workplace readiness, confidence and professional skills, equipping them for a successful transition into the world of work.

This Youth Month, the question is not whether young people are capable.

It is whether we are creating enough opportunities for them to succeed.

Every career journey tells a story, not only of achievements but of growth, resilience, learning and the decisions that shape what comes next.

This Youth Month, we are shining a spotlight on alumni from our Graduate Work Readiness Programme and the journeys they continue to build in the world of work.

We recently spoke with Sange Tshakumane about her journey over the past year. She shared the lessons she has learned, the challenges she has navigated and how she continues to grow in her role as a CIB Software Engineer Learner at Standard Bank.

Her story reflects something real: growth is not instant. It happens through consistent effort in the everyday moments where you choose to keep learning, keep improving and keep showing up.

June is Youth Month in South Africa, marking over 50 years since 1976, when young people took a stand that continues to shape the country’s story today. It is a time to honour that legacy while reflecting on the realities young people still face as they move into work and life.

Own your next means what comes next is not defined by circumstance alone, but by the choices, resilience and courage young people bring to each step forward.

This month holds celebration and reflection. Many step into opportunity, while others navigate barriers requiring persistence, access and support.

The next chapter is not far. It is written through every decision, setback and effort to keep going.

This June celebrates young people rising, adapting, moving forward. Your next unfolds.

The final Friday of May is here, a reminder of how quickly the year is moving.

This month reminded us that growth doesn’t always happen in big moments. Sometimes it looks like showing up consistently, learning in real time, building meaningful connections and taking small steps towards something bigger.

As we close off the month, we hope the work, effort and intention you’ve poured into yourself, your goals and your journey continues to open new opportunities and possibilities ahead.

Happy Friday from Giving Wings!

Workplace mental well-being is shaped less by awareness campaigns and more by everyday leadership behaviours and workplace culture.

People do their best work when they feel psychologically safe, able to contribute ideas, ask questions and learn from mistakes without fear of embarrassment or blame.

This article from WSPS highlights how leadership coaching can help strengthen psychologically safe workplaces and healthier organisational cultures through practical habits such as:
• Creating psychological safety • Communicating with clarity • Recognising effort and impact • Respecting boundaries • Supporting employees as people, not just as productivity metrics

Leadership development and employee well-being should go hand in hand. Sustainable, high-performing teams are built through trust, consistency and people-centred leadership.

Research continues to reinforce what many high-performing organisations already know: investing in people is not a “nice to have”. It is a business growth imperative.

According to LinkedIn’s 2025 Workplace Learning Report, career development remains closely linked to employee retention, engagement and organisational adaptability, especially as businesses navigate shifting skills demands, digital transformation and AI-driven change.

As industries evolve, organisations cannot afford to treat learning and development as an isolated HR activity. It must be seen as a strategic lever for building capability, strengthening leadership and preparing teams for the future of work.

At Giving Wings, we partner with organisations to help transform teams into confident, capable and future-ready professionals through impactful learning experiences, leadership development and workplace programmes designed for sustainable growth.

At the core of this work is our belief in owning your next: equipping individuals and teams with the skills, confidence and mindset needed to navigate change, take ownership of their growth and contribute meaningfully in the workplace.

When people grow, organisations grow.

Growth is not always loud. Sometimes, it is found in the questions, the reflections, the confidence built, and the moments where young professionals begin to see what they are capable of.

Our work with the FNB interns was a powerful reminder that when you create the right environment, people show up differently.

-They engage.
-They challenge themselves.
-They step forward.
