October is Mental Health Awareness Month - Workplace Trauma Awareness Month it is for me.
I believe that language describing our challenging experiences helps us to better engage with our challenges, and empowers to come up with solutions. I will be sharing mainly on Workplace Harassment and Trauma to raise awareness on how they impact Mental Health.
I want to start with Psychological Harassment.
Psychological harassment in the workplace refers to a form of non-physical abuse where an individual is subjected to repeated, hostile behaviour or subtle behaviour like passive aggression, to undermine their emotional or mental well-being.
This kind of harassment is often characterised by tactics intended to degrade, belittle, isolate, or dominate a person over time. It is insidious, as it may not always involve overt aggression but still creates a hostile and harmful environment.
Psychological harassment can be difficult to detect as it does not involve physical threats, but it often manifests through consistent, undermining actions that erode a person's confidence, sense of security, and emotional stability in the workplace.
2 signs indicating that you might be experiencing Psychological Harassment?
- Mental Health Decline: Heightened fear of criticism, anxiety, depression, or chronic stress. Over time, the emotional strain can worsen, resulting in long-term mental health challenges such as burnout or severe anxiety disorders and little or no desire to go to work.
- Reduced Self-Esteem and Confidence: Consistently feeling undermined, or humiliated leading to helpless doubt of your skills and abilities. Over time, this diminishes your self-worth and confidence, making it harder to perform your job effectively.
